Football (soccer)....
    #3142581 -

A few footie based questions:
Who likes it?  What is your team?
US soccer fans:  do you have proper leagues now?  How do you think it compares to your type of football?
Does anyone hate footie?  Why?
Arsenal rule.

We have pro soccer league, but i think its a joke mostly. Americans dont dig soccer that much. Most americans like american football.

Futbol rocks.  I too am a fan of Real Madrid, a family I was staying with in Spain got me one of their t-shirts in 1991.. unfortunately I didn't get to actually go to a game, but I saw plenty on TV.

The US has a Major League Soccer (MLS) league for professional players.  Though in most cases, it's not on the same playing field as many other national/international leagues.  Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great players out there.. but the experience is totally different.  The sport as played here doesn't seem to get as physical as when played elsewhere, and the stadiums are never as full since it seems that most Americans just don't pay soccer much mind.  This is probably due in large part to the 'newness' of a professional league in this country, and the fact that we are inundated with other sports everywhere we turn.

I take to watching Telemundo in the middle of the day or Fox Sports to catch some great international matches.. but I don't really keep up with all the standings.  At any rate, futbol is great

geokills: "The sport as played here doesn't seem to get as physical as when played elsewhere.."

I have to disagree, when compared to the mexican or central american league games ive watched on Telemundo, i find the MLS games are more physical and fouls are more agressive.
I claim this because soccer players have an inferiority complex in the states regarding the physicality of the game (uneducated people call them soccer fags, lawn ferries and the like) plus many US players grow up watching /playing other more violent sports like football and hockey, and that aggressiveness transfers over to the pitch.
Ive played most of my life and have seen violent tackles leading to many a serious injury.
I like MLS a lot, the parity in the level of talent leads to higher scoring games...
by far the most physical league, IMHO, is English Premiereship ...those guys are as violent as their fans  :smirk: :smirk:

no not all, watch english or german soccer for example, they play a lot harder than US teams. Overall, european teams play a lot more physical and aggressive, no doubt.

I love the futbol, I don't keep up with it much, I hate the MLS I'm more into european since they have more of a passion for the game. I like bayern munich, but like I said I don't keep up with standing all that much, but when the world cup rolls around....GO DEUTCHLAND!

Cool response, people. Seems like the US are getting more serious about soccer... for a relatively new team, US did pretty good in the World Cup'02.The English premiership has quite a few US international players now.
The game does seem to differ from continent to continent. Eastern European teams are pretty violent, south and central American footie is really flamboyant, and alot of African teams are really tricky with their feet.
I love it!

I played soccer for nearly 14 years. I just quit recently because I started attending college, and dont really have time. I had opportunities to play at many smaller schools, but I decided KU was a much better choice. Soccer is defenitaly growing here in the US. It is the most popular youth sport. Im thinking in the next 10 years our national team as well as MLS will gain a large amount of skill due to the 1younger kids getting older. But still, when I want to watch some good games I usually watch EPL, not mls
