People in Europe are crazy about soccer. If your a guy its imperative that you at least support one domestic team and preferably one international team as well.
You don't have to be an expert but you need to know the key players of various teams in england, Italy, Brazil etc.
When you are in a social setting with guys, the conversation will inevitable steer to soccer. If you are badly informed the other guys will know instantly and shut you out from the conversation or smirk at your comments. So if you want to make new friends you better be in the loop.
Also more than theoretical knowledge there is the actual playing of the game. In the summer time you can bet that at least two guys brought their soccer balls with them and expect to get a friendly game going at a party.
While its OK to politely decline you will no doubt be left out of the important bonding soccer provides.
Again you don't need to be a master but you need to be able to demonstrate some skill with the leather ball. As a ritual before the game starts everyone passes around the ball and when they receive it they start juggling it to show the other guys that they got skills and control. This goes on until everyone has showed their stuff. After that people spread out and shoot long balls to each other and in this stage its important you prove you know how to kick a pass and how to receive it.
After some warm up the actual game starts. The performance in the actual game isn't really that important since most people are drunk by now. Just dribble the ball a few times to show that you can and spend the rest of the game just having fun.
The Import ans of "the game" is two fold. First its a way to bond with the other guys, second its a valid reason to take of your shirt and impress the girls that are watching with your toned physique and ball control. Also you can check out how you measure up to the other guys.
Various male rituals follow where the guys "hoot" and jump up and bang their chests together after scoring a goal.
After the game some inevitable football talk follows where you bash the other guys teams and debate whether Ronaldinho went offside during the last game at the derby.

yeah, when someone tries talking to me about sports I dread knowing that I have to confess to them "yeah, I'm not really into sports..." and then they look at me like I'm crazy, and I look at them like I'm crazy, and we both know that the two of us will have nothing to talk about.
This effectively cuts me off from a large portion of males in western society. But get me talking about psychedelics or philosophy and THEN we'll have something to chat about!
It's all about your culture, we take part in a drug culture, and so we usually just talk about drugs or trippin...

Baseball is boring as hell, unless you are drinking and you are at the game (it's fun then).
Basketball is ok. I can appreciate the grace of the game and the struggles of large black men who have large genitalia.
Football is pretty exciting I think.

I hate sports. Don't remember the last time I watched a sporting event on purpose. If someone tries to talk sports to me I happily tell them that I could give a shit. And if a connection to sports is important to someone for social purposes then I probably don't want to socialize with that person anyway.

I love football and hockey. Playoff football and hockey is the best. Especially at a crowded sports pub. You can hate sports, but you will have a GREAT time while at a sports pub during the playoffs. I gurantee it.

Soccer is bad ass.
I started playing when I was nine and continued playing every year up until my first year of college. Most of the guys that I played with in high school and college (intramural) were stoners.
It takes a lot of endurance to play...and there is a lot of strategy involved.

Soccer is freaken awesome. Soccer is not given enough credit in america. I would like to see all those fatass football players run around the field for 2hrs! Yah right! I played in high school, it is awesome.

Iam from England and I find "Soccer" (football over here) really boring, but I agree that it is seem as the norm for every man to be into sport which sucks. But what the hell is up with American sport? I mean cheerleaders.. what purpose do they serve except to encourage you to take advantage of the stupidly lax gun laws over there?!
