Help! Colored Mycelium???
    #314007 - 05/10/01 01:18 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Okay, here's the story...my jars colonized fine, but I slacked off hardcore and left them for about 3 weeks after they were fully colonized before I birthed them. In all the jars, there are a few small, dark grey colored spots in the mycelium. The cakes smell fine, and the spots don't appear to be spreading rapidly, which makes me think it isn't a containminent, but I'm not sure. Any advice?

How large are the spots?

sorry to tell you, but it is a contamination. is it grey or off white. if its off white or yellowish then its probably not, but if its grey then it is. it is most likely cobweb mold, and this mold does not florish inside the jars, but i garuntee that if you birthed the cake, or cased it it will be ruined. sorry :(

one more thing, if you are desperate and have the time and the room and you decide to try it (i am usually in denile, and i always try anyway) just cut out a big chunk around the spots, and then case or birth as normal. i would suggest casing and giving it a really good spray down with a solution of h2o2 and water. good luck with it if you do try it, cause it will proly be pretty tough to save at this point.

they're smaller than a pencil eraser, and not all of the grayishness is in spot form...it appears to only be on the mycelium that is pressing against the glass

i take it then you are just goin pf style. i would cut the mold off of the cake so it does not interfere with fruiting, and then give it a light misting of peroxide/water solution. it may fruit, but the chances are slim. good luck to ya though, and i hope that all goes well ;)

i agree with whereabouts... it is better to try it than it is to give up and trash the whole damn thing... give it a shot, hey, at least you have a chance. its better than no chance at all...
