Pinning frustration
    #3133470 - 09/14/04 10:20 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have done a few casings now and always seem to get mixed results.

I have done straight verm and 50/50 and it what always happens is i get a bunch of pins all over the casing (not as uniform as i would like but decent) and within a couple days about 2/3 of them abort and i am left with a few patches that make really nice mushrooms but the rest never mature.

I have them in foil baking pans inside a makeshift PMP. there is plenty of FAE and humidity. Before the pinning i mist the casing lightly and once it starts to pin i leave it be.

Any suggestions?

I think your problem is that they don't have enough water.

Getting the level of watering right is a bit of an art that needs practice.
I have drain holes in my casing, but have the container inside another to prevent seapage into the chamber and contams, so its hard to over water, just make sure you don't have any puddles on top.
A good few heavy mistings over a few days after casing is good in my option.

Water is what I was thinking as well.

Mayhaps i shall mist a little more upon putting them into the fruiting chamber.

Making sure there are no puddles on top is the main thing you are saying?

Aye, water laying on top can cause overlay, so you don't want that.

Excess watering can drown the mycelium if it is allowed to collect in the bottom of the substrate, drain holes allow excess water drains away so it can't drown the substrate.
I don't dunk casings, I just heavy mist between flushes, and pour away the excess.

most appreciated

Dude was reading something recently regarding not spraying directly onto the casing. It said to spray up in the air above the casing and let the mist fall softly on your tray. Something about the direct water potentially preventing knots from occuring and preventing the myc from penetrating the casing layer.

This may or may not have anything to do with your problem.

Just to make sure: all that water being added to the casing, misting or spraying or dunking, is a 10% solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide, right? Cuz that's what I'm doing on my first ever casings.

A lot of people seem to be using peroxide... But it will stunt the growth and turn your casing a nasty grey color especialy if you use more than a 10% solution. I say, don't use it unless you are getting contam problems.

>i have been using a peroxide solution to mist the casings

Plenty of people do. And they would probably disagree with me. I usually mist the casings with peroxide right after they are cased (because it doesn't hit the myc) and then quit using it.

I find that it stunts the growth just a bit and makes the myc turn a bit grey or sometimes bluish, which makes it harder to spot contams. It shouldn't hurt you too badly though.

I definitely believe in not using h2o2 (except for perlite) if not needed. I use it for cleaning clone tissue though and it works great for that but not for spraying cakes or casings. Just my $ .02

I use a light misting of .3% (3% h202 1:10 with water) h2o2 when I first assemble the casing, mist the bare substrate and the top of the casing, then just plain water from then on.
I use boiled, filtered, tap water.

I am definitely with fastfred/hyphae on not using h2o2 as a matter of course, especially on a mycelium that has not been grown on a peroxidated substrate. I got a lot less aborts when I stopped using h2o2 all the time.
