Water content for "new" recipe

Hey, the other day I mixed: Measurements in CUPS 1.5 parts BRF 1.5 parts vermiculite 1 part worm castings (pure, no filler) 1 part composted cow dung (w/ humus - Greenthumb brand) 1.5 parts water I filled up 6 jars and sterlilized, then inoculated. Anyway, it was only yesterday, so I can't really mention germination yet. Anyway, I'm wondering if this was a good idea, and more importantly, if the water content is correct. I'd hate for the substrate to be too dry. Anyone have experience with this type of recipe? Peace.

Sounds like a bad mixture to me. Unless you pressure cook it really well, the worm castings and dung will contam the BRF. It would be better to use BRF and verm alone and, when they are fully colonized, case with the composted dung and worm castings.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you'd wanna use the dung for it's nutrional value, you'd first colonise the BRF/verm, than use that to colonise the dung/wormcastings, than case?

The only reason I posted the recipe was to find out about the water content. I'm happy to say that all six jars are showing obviously rhizomorphic mycelial growth. So it seems the water content was perfect. I'm not a newbie, ya know. My sterile technique is good enough that I've never lost a jar to contamination. I figured I'd try to make up a new recipe for the sake of experimentation. Why not have the potency boost from the BRF and the size boost from the dung? Besides, if for some reason the experiment fails, there really is no love lost because I made my own spore syringes and I will have learned something not found in either the Stamets book or on PF's web site, heaven forbid. Anyway, I'd have to say the recipe above is performing nicely. And by the way, you don't want to case with nutritious materials such as dung and worm castings. Talk about a bad mixture! Also, colonizing BRF/verm is ONE way to do it. The PF Tek is a good start - a fine building block - but for sakes alive, let's try something different, people - just for the hell of it. In any case, I pressure cooked for more than an hour. The spores germinated and the myclia are strong. From here, I think I'll take two jars, crumble, and spawn some composted dung/worm shit. The other four jars will be crumbled and cased. Thanks anyway for the input. I will continue to post results. Peace.

As for the mixture without the worm castings, they have rpoduced nice results for Pan Trop like for anno, so I suppose the worm castings might give you some extra nutritional value. For the water content, if nothing looks stickey, and if mycelium can colonise all of the substrate, your water content iis about right!

Paddo: Hartelijke dank. I'm happy to say that each jar is colonizing very rapidly with strong mycelia. It's day 5 since inoculation and already mycelia are connecting from other sides of the jar. I'm sure the PC Cambodias will enjoy this nutritious blend. Groetjes! Peace.

If you are pressure cooking, it doesn't really matter what you put into the jar, it will be sterilized, so with proper technique there shouldn't be any issue with contamination.
This recipe sounds really good for Panaeolus beginners.
