First day of school again.
    #3040329 -

What a fucking nutty day. First I head up to the psychology department and run into the head of the department. She immediatly reams me a new one becuase i'm dressed to casual. I explian I don't dress up for any occasion including funerals.
She doesn't give a shit and says as a instructor i'm representing the psychology department as a whole. As soon as she says that a professor walks by in shorts and a tee shirt. I point him out and she says loudly"he's a tenured professor and your a graduate student, there's a big difference". I say "so he doesn't represent the psychology department". She storms off saying she'll take it up with my advisor.

Then during my intro to psychology class I give a easy day. Just go over the course outline and sceduale. Then I let them go. Well this 19 year old girl comes up and says she has a question. I figure it's a question about the course. Long story short she's crying and laying out her life story of abuse and neglect. I have like 5 minutes to get to the other side of campus for a class i'm taking on toxicology.
So I quickly tell her that i'm not yet a psychologist and am not qualified to help her. Knowing she needs help I give her a contact in the psychology office that is a clinical psychologist. I walk her to the building since it's on my way.

I get to toxicology 10 minutes late. I have 2 more classes after that and then I head back to the psychology office to work. Immediatly i'm cornered by the psychologist I sent the girl too. He's pissed and says i'm a asshole for refering her to him on the first day of school. He says he doesn't need a marketing person for his practice.
I explian the situation and my reasoning and he settles down. He says you'll get that alot now. People latch onto people who are psychologists(or training to be) thinking that they have the answers for there problems.
I jokingly say I'll send them all to him. I can tell my joke wasn't taken with a sense of humor. Then I start walking down the hall to the room were my little cubicle is located. Agian the psychology chair comes up and says she talked to my advisor and he is going to have a talk with me on the importance of looking professional.
I tell her it won't do any good. There's no rule in the graduate student guide and therefor I can choose what I were.(BTW I had on kakis and a button down shirt). I see my advisor and talk to him about a upcoming meeting I have with my thesis board. As i'm getting ready to leave I ask him about our talk. He says don't worry about her she's a crazy bitch, get used to being fucked with by her. Apparently she takes all her life frustrations out on graduate students.

So day one in the new semester and already more work than I can handle and more drama then a daytime soap. Sorry to vent ,but i'm sitting here in my cubicle and you people are the only ones around I can bitch too.

Yeah first days are always crazy. I liked it better when I was a undergraduate and just had to learn. Learning is fun and healthy. Being responsible for other people learning is another story. Once I get some time under my belt and get good at it I'm sure it will be rewarding. Of course by then i'll have my PhD and will not teach anymore.

That's a hell of a first day.  At least it sounds like you're standing your ground with people that abuse their power.  And it sounds like you handled that girl's situation just fine given the circumstances.  Tomorrow will be a better day.  :sun:

Unfortunatly grad students get alot of shit. Were basically at the professors mercy.
Professor X doesn't want to teach his psychology class today. No problem a grad student will do it. Doesn't matter we have to take classes, teach classes, do research,do professors research. It's percieved we have extra time to do other shit. Most professors I have are cool, but a couple are assholes. They treat us with this hazing bullshit like were subhuman little kids. Funny thing is i'm older then most of them. You can't bitch about it niether. It's up to them if you get your PhD.

I'm more venting then bitching. It's annoying ,but not real bad. It's part of the process and i'll make it through it just fine. The thing thats hardest is I have kids and my time with them is important. School definitly cuts into that. At least my schooling will benifit their future.(hopefully)

All I know is when I was an undergrad, I always had sympathy for the grad student. They were so damn busy. I couldn't believe that they ever found the time to grade my papers between taking classes and teaching classes.

Sounds like you have to walk a fine line between kissing ass and telling people to fuck off.

I think we all have to walk that line; some a lot more than others for sure. Academia is it's own little world.
