Flowhood question

Should I use my new flowhood when isolating myc. from contams and/or when starting from spores (not syringe, inoc.loop and sporeprint)? I?m confused  :confused: cause I?ve read about just using it when working with pure healthy mycellium and not when starting from spores or when isol.from a contam (to avoid the release of spores in all the room). But I?ve also read of people working with it when a plate is partially contamed and such things.

use it all the time, just be sure to place the petri dish so that the contaminated part is down wind of the flow hood, other wise you are likely to blow the contam all over everything else. If you can turn down your flow hood to its lowest setting, you should.

Same with spores.

The problem is that due to a lack of space, I use a room for everything: incubation, fruiting and sterile work.
Should I: a) do the sterile work somewhere else ? b) do what you said in that room ? c) Clean the air with the flowhood,let say 15-30 minutes, then stop it and do the agar work without the flowhood working?

If its a nice closed room sure, run the flow hood for an hour, then shut it off, and try as hard as poss not to disturb the floor or any sides, as these are were contam spores settle, the slightest foot movment can waft them back to being airborne.

i myself though, would work in the air flow from the hood its self, to do anywork, petri work, spore work ext. Depends what you flow is like from the hood.

I've always worked in front of a running flowhood thats what their designed for! :wink: Ya don't really need to run it before hand just wipe everything down in front of it while it's running. The air coming out is clean and running it first just fills up the prefilter anyways making changing it sooner a must. A GB would be better for spores and contams IMO. Just my $.02 :wink:
