FAQ 25. Why do some people throw up on shrooms? What helps?
    #3007253 -

Tripper's FAQ

25. Why do some people throw up while coming up and, can it be avoided, controled?

Stomach discomfort... why does it happen and what can be done about it?

My friend, Don Quixote likes mint-shroom tea to ease stomach discomfort.

PF Fanaticus liked to extract all the goodies out of the shroom, and eat the pure psylocybin.

What discomfort can a first time tripper expect?

As for tea... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...4dbdade1673ff01

well.. the way I think about it, eating shrooms is eating poison. Your body wants to reject the poison because its a natural reaction. when I eat shrooms all I do is remember that its an initial reaction of my body and after 30 minutes its gone and the fun begins. People flipping out from trippin is also a reason but less likely the most common reason, IMHO. The last time I saw someone puke from shrooms is cause someone else puked, and the other person puked because he kept passing out and convulsing. Which freaked me the hell out.. that was a crazy crazy night.. a story for another thread.

Think what you want, but homegrown cubensis are not poisonous. Not at all. Not even a little.

One of the most effective anti-shroom tactics was lying about their safety.

They do give you gas and discomfort, they do not poison.

Psilocybe mushrooms aren't poisonous - let's get that straight.

There are probably compounds in the mushrooms that cause this sort of reaction. An organic material that maeks your body react with feelings of nausea and wanting to vomit.

There's a very slim chance that it's the psilocybin, because extraction methods were devised to rid the nausea symptoms and they work.

Some people still have a reaction to shroom tea. I'd say the best possible method is to obtain pure psilocybin crystals via extraction.

A first time tripper should expect the worst, since everybody's body reacts differently to different drugs. Smoking marijuana helps by easing anxiety (indica) and reducing nausea.

Shroom nausea is funny, some say it is because of the hard to digest shroom fibre... some say queesyness is something that happens to trippers in general. Many feel like puking on lsd.

Usually, if you know this is a bi-product of the come-up... and think positive, you'll make it without tossing your mushies.

"Why do some people throw up on shrooms?"

People are different. Your stomache has to break all of it down and some people's stomaches are like "eew man! get this OUTTA here!!!" There are varying levels of sensitivity to mushroom digestion within slightly different biological and chemical stomache structures or something lol

"What helps?"

I've heard its not good to consume a lot of dairy before mushrooms.. I guess they don't get along in the stomache. One story in particular had to do with a group of people eating tons of ice cream before eating mushrooms - they then proceded to have a great powerful trip but had painful tummies for most of it.

Other than that man I don't know I would say have a barf-bag nearby if you tend to throw up so you don't have to make a dramatic bolt for the restroom

Mushrooms don't make me puke but I usually do them in tea anyways now (oh try that!) which.. lol doesn't seem hard on the stomache - heh I almost forgot to suggest that

But anyway mushrooms don't make me puke but auahuasca does.. next time with that stuff I am going to have something to hurl in. My stomache does NOT have nearly as much fun as my mind does with the aya

I think its just the mushroom fiber, some people might not have the enzyme to digest it well enough. Sometimes people don't chew it thoroughly because they don't like the taste and just swallow chunks of it and that can cause it too.

Here's the answer so far. Please add your input to this discussion, or edit the Tripper's FAQ Wiki yourself.

Why do some people throw up while coming up and, can it be avoided, controlled?

Some people experience nausea and/or vomiting during mushroom experiences, especially with higher doses. This is largely due to the somewhat indigestible nature of the fungus coupled with the mental reaction to the active ingredients. Generally the nausea is mild and passes shortly into the experience.

For a very few people nausea can also be quite strong, persistent and annoying, even from a medium dose. Usually, the best course of action is to give into it and throw up. Nausea usually passes fairly quickly after vomiting. Fighting it for long periods of time is difficult and most often futile. Although 70% of the nausea may be psychological, the other 30% is real and keeps it on your mind, no matter how hard you fight it.

In this writer's experience, mixing 2 tablespoons of ground ginger with the powdered dose of shrooms has been 60-70% successful in preventing the nausea altogether.

The most widely used over-the-counter nausea medication is Dramamine (dimenhydrinate). Dramamine is quite effective but may cause drowsiness.

The most effective natural alternative for treating motion sickness is the spice ginger. Ginger offers the same relief as Dramamine without the side effect of dizziness. Ginger blocks the body's reflex to vomit. Ginger taken in capsule form or a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger in a cup of warm water will have an overall calming effect and reduce the severity of symptoms. Ginger can also be taken beforehand to prevent the onset of nausea attacks. Take the ginger at least half an hour before leaving on a trip. This will usually prevent any occurrence.

The most commonly used natural anti-nausea agent is marijuana. Many would argue that it is even more effective than dramamine or ginger. One advantage is it's quick action. A possible downside is that smoking too much may actually cause nausea.

Other possible negative effects or mushrooms include anxiety and unwanted or frightening thoughts and visions. Mushrooms, though perhaps to a lesser degree than LSD, can precipitate strong, temporary changes in an individual's experience of life and reality. It can be a powerful psychoactive experience, especially at higher doses, which is significantly affected by experiences, set and setting.
Recent experiences, especially strong ones, can have a substantial effect on a trip. Physically or psychologically unsettling events in the days before a Mushroom trip can blossom into more serious distress and trauma while tripping. It is important to be prepared for the possibility of encountering difficult or frightening mental states. The "Erowid Psychedelic Crisis FAQ" addresses some of the issues involved in dealing with a difficult trip.
