Vocal exercises?
    #2992645 - 08/11/04 08:42 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I'm a songwriter, and I try my best to sing, but I hate my voice. Any tips on how to improve my singing?

get a piano or a guitar and sing up and down scales or chord progressions, so you can be used to switching to the different tones. and learn to use your diaphram.

Have you ever heard of the Alexander Technique? It's a set of exercises that help you control your breating and posture- both absolutely key to a good vocal performance.

Also age is a factor- most people don't have a very mature voice till the age of around 20-25.

Do different vowel pronounciations.

"ahh" "ee" "ay" "oh" "ew"

mah-may-me-moe-moo

sing these in straight tone, adding different creshendos and decreshendos, the move up a half step and do the same.  the you can sing arpeggios "do-me-so-me-do-ti-do"

Also stretch before vocalizing, this opens up the lungs, stretches the capacity, and it good breathing work outs.  Release all air, breathe into 12, hold for 12, release for 12.  This works well for centering meditation as well.

Also there are foods and liquids to aviod before singing :properly:
good-
water
apples
light liquids
oranges

bad-
sugars(soda, chocolate, etc)
bananas
heavy foods (carbs)

Also differentiate how you use your head and your chest voice, you will notice the breaks during your scale repetition.

Have good posture for breathing and clarity.  Always support you tones, use good diction, and dont breathe in between phases  (where it wouldnt make sense to put a period in a sentence in a vocalm phrase)

Thats all for now, hope it comes of good use.

A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

And another thing, when singing, try at all costs to release tension in your neck, throat, and chest.

By keeping this tension in singing, will ruin your vocal chords and support.

Also milk is another bad food, anything that coats the throat, basically.

Also a good way to practice diction is little catchy school phrases like:

mama made me mash my m&ms

"mama made me mash"-straight tone, say on middle c

"my - m - & - ms" arpeggio down (so-me-do)

blah also check out a book called:
How to sing. -Lilli Lehmann (shes a dead german lady who knew her shit!)
