The Contradiction Challenge
    #2972544 - 08/06/04 03:46 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I'd like to prove that no matter what kind of situation, action, or point of view one brings fourth, no matter how ugly, beautiful, positive sounding, negative sounding, nice or bad it is, that if you attatch your own personal point of view of wheather or not it's good or bad, right or wrong. No matter what, there is always a contradiction, another point of view, whether you think its awful or whether you think its reasonable.

heres an example:

Nuclear war is probably the worst possible thing I could imagine.

Contradiction: Why? We would get rid of millions of humans that do nothing but rape the earth and deplete our world of its beauty and are nothing bu parasites. In time the world will recover from the radioactivity, it will be a LONG time, but its the only way to rid the world of its worst threat. Us.

One more, and much more common sounding and easier on the eyes.

Oranges are delicious

Contaradiction: No they are not.

Even hard core facts are contradictory....try it! And maybe I'm wrong, but we'll just have to see:) I'm willing to listen to any other opinions:)

one of the foundations of hermetic philosophy is the principle of polarity.

sums it up nicely

What about this one?

There is a contradiction to every statement

:smirk:

What people here are trying to do is contradict that statement. Ironic, eh? By attempting to contradict it, we just prove it even further

Is that your contradiction to my statement?

It's my opinion that's it's just your opinion that there is a contradiction to every statement, hence that statement is contradicted!

The only infallible truths are found in paradoxes, and not because they're true

Or, as the Tao Te Ching puts it:
"True sayings seem paradoxical."

No, because it's not an infallible truth. Some people don't enjoy any movies, some don't watch movies at all, and some are blind and deaf and can't watch movies. Not to mention, good is an opinion, and you can't base truths around opinions

This is assuming there are truths, though. I say the only infallible truths are found in paradoxes, because they are irrefutable. Try to argue them, and you'll go in circles, and come back to where you started from without any new knowledge of it at all

Yeah, I think you're right. There is a contradiction to every statement, and that isn't a bad thing. There is no universally correct way to think, but maybe there are ways that simply work better for ourselves, our communities and our earth... of course better is a broad and general term.

If there are goats, then there are goats.

How can that be contradicted?

Any "If P, then P" statement is necessarily true, and cannot be contradicted.

no contradictory statement: I like going to sleep

contradictory statement: going to sleep is the best thing ever.

we each experience own own personal "truths" but that doesn't mean we can apply it to everyone else as well.

what works for me may not always work for you <----contradict that.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Also, "may" statements can never be contradicted, because they "sit on the fence".  :stoned:
