My future garden * 3
    #29698838 -

I'm clearing forest to make a garden, this area was cleared in 2010 so the biggest trees have only been growing 15 years or less, the biggest one I cut so far was only 6 inches across but the marjority were less then 2 inches

On the distance I can see some huge poplar that grew, if I cut that far I'll have to learn to do a real notch hinge cut, so far I could just cut straight through cause they are all small

So far I cleared a small area and piled trees, then today I striped the trees so they were like a stick, if the end was bigger then 1.25 inches I cut the stick at 1.25 inches, my chipper I bought on FB marketplace says it works till 1.5 inches, but I find bigger sticks make it sound like its struggling, it has brand-new blades, the blades that were in it were toast, I tried a stick and it couldn't even chip it, new blades were $20 at Canadian tire, and the blades are double.sided so you can flip them around and get a second use, the ones that were in it looked like someone took a grinder to them

I chipped all the small trees and now I've started on stripping the bigger ones and cutting at 1.25 inches

I also filled a barrel with leaves and mulched it with a weed whacker, and poured it into a leaf tower I made, I made two leaf towers but I don't know if I'll fill both by snow fall

Here is my leaf towers and a coyoete or something idk

O got a few inches of mulch in one now

This is my pile of chips, it looks small but it was really a bunch of trees

Here's some ends that my chipper didn't like cause they were too big

I found a red elderberry on my property, it is way higher in toxins then black elderberry, but it seems to be possible.to eat if you are very dedicated, I seen one site that said to simmer for 30 minutes, I seen another say indigenous folk would leave the cooked berries in a running river (like processing acorns), you need to remove the seeds as well, I'm thinking about maybe making a jelly one day when they fruit, since a jelly naturally removes the seeds when you drip it in a jelly bag

I'm not sure the plant ever fruited yet, it was basically just a stick, its also 2 meters from a 100 foot maple tree so its in shade most of the time

But I left it, it was in a area I'm clearing to plant a shade tolerant garden, so my first plant is a red elderberry, even if I don't eat it the berries look nice

Very nice. What month does Spring begin for you? And how long is a season there

Do you have plans of a style of garden, or what you will plant?

I'm putting in a layer garden next door.
The neighbor had some big trees/limbs tidied so it gets mostly sun- but I always design the garden for what it grows best, naturally. (Soil type/PH, slant of land, lighting, etc)

The idea is a co-op with this season a bit of a run through. Still need to work on variation of crop which will be next year but rn all four households get this each week

Now's the time to learn these skills and establish a food solution if needed.
Looks like you two are having fun with the new powertool. Best wishes!

In this spot its shaded so I can't grow most food crops, its going to be more of a spot to chill outdoors, I eventually want gravel paths and the gravel will make a circle path in the middle with a water fixture, just a small battery fountain or something, and the ridge to the south I'm going to make roofed spot, kinda like this but not as built up to avoid permit laws, just a piece of ply wood for a roof with a lawn couch undernethe

In another spot on the property i'm starting a small orchard, I'm going to order apples, peaches and hazelnuts and raspberries for spring

Right now I found black raspberries in my spot I'm clearing, today's project is to mow a spot where my orchard is going and transplant the black raspberries into full sun, but ai said to keep them 100 feet from my nursery berries cause wild ones carry viruses

So far I chipped somewhere between 5-8 cubic feet of wood chips, my pile is around 2x2x4 feet

I transplanted my first black raspberry where I think it should be able to get 6 hours of light at least

I found a Christmas tree on my property, ai says I need to prune it every summer to get the classic Christmas tree look (Pinus sylvestris)

I also found some stuff called wall lettuce or something, I ate one, it tasted okay, mind you I grew up eating riddichio, if you never ate bitter greens I don't think this would taste like food lol
