My Garden-Update
    #2985817 - 08/10/04 12:16 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Almost all of the pea flowers have turned into 4 inch+ pods now. I ate a few pods worth of peas yesterday, damn they were tasty. The corn is still growing, I only have one ear growing out of the tallest stalk though. Some green beans are as long as my hand now. The carrots are still small, the beets are still growing, the tomatoes are the size of golf balls now, and the cucumbers are still leafy plants. That is all.

This was my first garden, nothing to it man. Just get/rent a rototiller and have at it for a couple hours in the spring and fall. Plant the seeds right after the last frost (I don't think you have frosts in Cali though?) and then just water every day and fertilize with Miracle Gro (or whatever) every 2 weeks. Weed the garden when you can, it gets way out of hand if you let it go for a week or so. I love garden fresh vegetables.

I'm gonna do it! I live in the lower Sierra's so we do get some snow and frost. I just built a house on 20 acres so I got plenty of room (although most of the land slopes toward a river valley).

The problem I have here is that while the soil is rich, it's very rocky. I think it may break the blades of a roter tiller. Plus we have gophers. I'm thinking of making raised planters with screened bottoms. I can take good, rockless top soil from down the hill and fill 'em up.

Can't wait to get it going!

yah, I think I need to get some sort of garden going as well

I dont even really eat vegetables or cook meals (I'm a lazy college asshole), I just enjoy the process of watching something live, and the feeling that comes from seeing my positive influence on a life, even if it's just a plant.

The feeling of eating (or smoking in some cases  ) things you have grown yourself is an awesome experience.  I feel a synergy between the plants and myself when I eat things from my garden.  Definitely something everyone should try sometime is growing plants.

Well done! Gardens are so fucking neat. Carrots and tomatoes are especially good when you grow them yourself, they are SO MUCH sweeter than the ones you buy.
