Hey! First time grower I am a bit worried w my corn spawn.

Hey!

So I kinda did my first batch for corn spawn. Now that I have cooked it I kinda got worried and added in extra 5 minutes and like 15-20% of the corn grains kinda split. Most of them still have a dry inside idk what went wrong.

Can I still proceed and put them into jars for sterilization at 80kpa/15psi for like 120 mins. I got 3/4qt jars, 1/4 qt jars and 1/2 qt jars for this

My LC is already ready to go JMF albino, McKenaii and B+ which I multiplied in my LGM.

I am worried abt contamination with these jars I dont want it to go to waste but also I bought all the corn which was left in the near by stores.

Could I use this corn for like PF tek cakes and mix it w coco noir, verm and a touch of soy protein for it? could that still work?

Im open to all critisism and tips and help really wanna make this happen and come to live.

Most of the ones I am cutting open have kind of a raw center isnt that much like 1/2 of a raw grain of rice

Welcome to the shroomery!:smile::mushroom2:Are you following a Tek for the grain prep? Will help give us a better idea of trouble shooting. I'm not familiar with corn, though I'd imagine somebody who is will chime in

Here's one of the easiest grain prep around, though it utilizes millet instead

You can hit up a local feed mill and get 50lbs of the stuff for like $30.

I suggest all new users start getting into Agar this way you can turn that LC into an infinite supply of mycelium that you can verify as clean.

I love corn. That will work fine, ideally you want to avoid splitting them open but you will almost always pop a few.

I would recommend spreading them out on a towel and making surer they are mostly dry.
Take a square of toilet paper and dab a few kernels then look at the paper. Does it have many noticeable wet spots? If yes let it dry more. If no proceed. I am impatient as fuck when I run corn and rush the hell out of every step. Usually have a ton of split kernels and rarely have issues. If you want to speed up drying get a hair dryer involved. I usually duel wield these weapons against water to speed that shit up. Once you have your corn dry enough not to leave spots on the toilet paper load your jars. Running a presto? Tape two quarters to the jigler with electrical tape. This will get you up to around 17-18 psi. Toss in three quarts of water in the presto don’t forget the trivet and start heating. While it’s heating wrap your lids with foil and fold the excess foil up around the necks so the water stays out. As you complete jars add them to water.

At some point around this stage I usually remember to add some vinegar to the water to keep the jars clean. Vinegar is optional. Get all the jars in there then slap on that lid.
Keep the jigler off for this bit. Wait until you see thick steam coming out the vent then set a timer for 10 minutes. Use this time to clean up the mess from the last step, or don’t. Once your timer goes off put the jigler on and babysit it while it pressures up. With the quarters you should get to around 17-18 psi, first time with those up there keep an eye on it for a bit make sure it starts wobbling around 17-18.

You want a slow and steady wobble adjust heat until its moving at a consistent pace, to hot and you use up your water to fast. To cool and you wont maintain sterilization temps. I usually run quart jars for 90 minutes at around 17psi but have had the same results at 15psi. Idk in my mind hotter is better.

If you’re interested I may have already written my lazy impatient corn TEK. I don’t remember, been a while since I’ve been on here. I’ve had great luck with it, most of the pictures in my signature were from my lazy impatient corn TEK.

Popcorn is an S tier grain. More work but it's my favorite for some reason.

Good on you for crackin em open to check like that. That's what I do while they're boiling. There is no clock involved at all. They're done when the middles are cooked through, that's my only criteria. You'll be okay with them not quite done.

I also towel dry. I don't use hair dryer but if they're real wet I'll throw a box fan over em, but the best move is to make sure they're spread as thin as will fit so there's no mountains with wet middles. Toilet/tissue paper check is the way, after awhile you'll know it by feel and not need it anymore.

I don't have the weight mod on the presto, but the higher PSI is even better yeah. I usually do 2 hours just to be safe. I actually did 3hrs on my last batch but I think that's me forgetting the teks, the numbers drift up cause I'm always playin it safe on whatever I did the last batch even though they always come out clean :lol: Remember the 10min vent, it's important.

Some of them splitting open is whatever. If they crack all the way open to where there's open halves etc I'll pick those out, along with any burned-looking ones when I move to jars. But some light splitting is nbd. If it's PC'd long enough and colonized long enough, nothin to worry about.



They're dry now so it's not the most helpful but these are some from my rejects pile. You can see that they're split WAY open. That's the only stuff I'll toss. Less than that, I don't worry about it. And you won't catch em all, it's fine.

Don't over complicate this mate. The popcorn looks fine and is ready to use imo:rockon:

I recommend switching grains though, unless you wanna grow pans because pans seem to love that shit but I myself would probably still chose other grains. In my honest opinion popcorn is hard to properly hydrate compared to grains like millet/wbs which can be prepped incredibly easily by just adding dry millet in a jar with water and then PC it and you've got grains ready for use and it's much faster than popcorn and wheat at least with Cubensis and Ochraceocentrata.

Ochras on wheat, popcorn and wbs(millet). The wbs jar was inoculated several days after the wheat and popcorn with the same agar.


This is a better picture of how my popcorn looked when I managed to prep it properly, as you can see yours isn't extremely different.
