I'm using Debian "Trixie" (hooker name this release is awesome) at work and home and I doubt very much Debian will bend the knee to age verification demands in the future.

It's open source anyway, people will just remove unnecessary crap like broadcasting user ID at an OS level. That shit only works on closed source OS's.

If GNOME wants to shoot itself in the foot and add this nonsense Plasma will reign supreme. Trying to make people do stuff like this with Linux will just never work.

I switched from debian to void, at first it was just a test, but 3 days into the test systemd announced its adding an age attestation option and i thought fuck it ill stick with void

the installer dosnt hold your hand as much as debian, I had to look up how to manually partition my disks, it leaves you in the dark if you want to use LVM or LUKS, I think everyone should use LUKS simply to avoid a chroot attack,  I used to think encryption was overboard, till i needed to chroot into my machine once and i was like damn that was too easy lol

As long as you have physical access to someone elses machine then that chroot attack could be used yes.

Switched to Manjaro last night. Noticeably faster than OpenSUSE. Pacman is also much quicker than zypper. Happy with the switch so far.

Colorado amended their bill to exclude open source operating systems

gopher said:
so califonia, colorado, and brasil have set laws needing to age verify users

ubuntu and elementary are working together to code something to appease this law

other operating systems will soon probably follow suit

midnightBSD has said they will prohibit users is such areas from using thier OS in the license, as for linux that would probably violate the GPL

omarchy linux has said it refuses to comply with retarded califonia laws

That is so dystopian, and -to me- totally against the spirit of linux. Kids should be encouraged to try out Linux! Especially now, when the primary computer they use is a phone. Kids are becoming less familiar (and less interested!) in desktop hardware/software. Shame on Ubuntu.

Linux guys/gals are bad ass and will no doubt just make a clone of Ubuntu without it. Good thing there are literally thousands of distros to choose from in the meantime.
Glad my state hasn't done this, Ubuntu is my favorite. Currently on a laptop with Linux Mint

I havnt been keeping up but I think some states have carved out exceptions for GNU/Linux, it will only apply to like windows/apple/android I think

If I remember I'll look into this later tonight and see if I can see what the current scoop is

Probably figured out it was impossible to implement on Linux and other Unix like systems.

The main problem isn't so much whether the OS runs it, but whether other software insists on verifying against it before allowing access.  An "agewall".

It's a bit like some websites in the 90s/00s that only ran on Internet Explorer, so Linux users (and some Mac users) were just locked out.  IE had so much market, none of the website owners cared to fix it.

But instead of browser compatibility, software and websites just won't let you in without talking to your age verifier process first.  I hope it remains so chaotic and unevenly implemented that there's no one standard, and a verifier process that always answers "21" is enough to get through agewalls.

It's politics, so I doubt anybody will manage to require an actually secure system.  Sites/apps could insist on IDs signed by a third party and then you're stuck.  Hopefully it's not software you wanted to run...
