are you going to use a linux distro that age verifies you?

so califonia, colorado, and brasil have set laws needing to age verify users

ubuntu and elementary are working together to code something to appease this law

other operating systems will soon probably follow suit

midnightBSD has said they will prohibit users is such areas from using thier OS in the license, as for linux that would probably violate the GPL

omarchy linux has said it refuses to comply with retarded califonia laws

No I will not be using those distros. I hope OpenSUSE doesn't adopt that.

Also, people actually use midnightBSD?

I tried it once and it was a mess. GhostBSD is by far a superior user-friendly BSD.

i think ubuntu/elementary are working to some how put the feature into dbus which i dont know much about, other then it autoran my dunst so the "dunst &" i put in my .xinitrc was useless i found out a few weeks later doing something else that made me query dbus

i also heard the solution might be put into gnome, if that happened all gnome distros would be effected

depending on the restrictions i may or may not run a distro that implements it, if none of the programs i use require to hook into it ill run a distro free of it for sure, the biggest two sites i use that i could see using it are youtube and reddit, i wonder if shroomery could be forced to check users age

ive been planning to fuck off to neocities, gopher, and gemini, but im so hooked on modern slop i have been having trouble feeling engaged in that type of content

systemd adds age verification option, this adds it to almost every distro

The only thing I've had to do different is learn xbps commands cause I've only used apt before, and I need to link services to my init, cause it didn't happen automatically, you do it like this after installing with xbps

sudo ln -s /etc/sv/<service-name> /var/service/

So its pretty simple, I also had some trouble.installing pipewire because I asked LLM ai instead if using the docs

Installing programs has to be about 5x faster than apt, xbps is lightning fast

Also updating is one command

Instead of sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade, its just "xbps-install -Su" but you may have to run it twice if xbps itself needs to update, if the xbps package manager needs to update it will.update itself the first time you run the command, and then when you run the command a second time it will update all the packages, which tripoed me out on install cause I didn't read the docs and I couldn't figure out why I was having dependency issues (I updates xbps without updating everything else)

Ok right on I've heard xbps is super fast. I might install it on my old laptop in my shop that is currently running Debian

Ya. I'm really not too worried using OpenSUSE it's based in Germany, ya it uses systemd but they won't be using age verification. Just because it code is baked into systemd doesn't bother me.

mint is ubuntu based (unless you use mint debian edition) so mint will most likely just use whatever ubuntu implements, unless they decide to deliberately rip it out

i doubt youre using the debian edition, but you may be


run this in a terminal

cat /etc/os-release

( cat can be used to display the contents of a file, and etc/os-release will store your distro information)

i dont have a mint machine to test, but i suspect if youre running regular mint you will see "ubuntu" somewhere in the output

heres what mine looks like for comparison
