which linux distro for a beginner???
    #5506760 - 04/12/06 06:17 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I know this questions been asked here hundreds of times but new distros seem to come out all the time...

I've finally upgraded my hard drive and now have room to play around with multiple operating systems

Whats the easiest/best distro out there atm for a complete Linux newb running a 64 bit rig???

I hear SuSE, Ubuntu and Mepis are highly rated but I just don't know which to go for..

I would say go with Ubuntu Breezy Badger Edition, its basically as point and click friendly as Winblows.

I have had alot of good fortune with Fedora core 4 and my AMD64. I moved to OpenBSD x64 a month ago, and I will never turn back! Once you are familiar with the linux type enviroment I strongly recomend checking out a BSD system.

I used to run 2 Redhat boxes just for the hell of it, it was a pretty simple distro and was full featured.

i agree that ubuntu is the easiest for a total noob that just wants it up and running. i started with gentoo. my first install took 3 tries and close to 20 hours to complete. it sounds rediculous, but i learned more about linux in those 2 days than i wouldve learned from any book or lecture. i have tried ubuntu, slackware, fedora core 3, debian, mandrake (now mandriva), and a few others, but gentoo is by far my favorite.

but let me make this perfectly clear... if you want an easy install DO NOT try gentoo for your first distro. now i can do a full gentoo install in 4 hours from command line. i heard they have a gui install method now. maybe i will check that out and report back to you how it is.

I decided to download Kubuntu 5.10 ?Breezy Badger? for the AMD64.

It sounds pretty much the same as Ubuntu apart from it comes with the KDE packages instead of Gnome.

Just about to install it now, wish me luck lol

I never understood really what a BSD distro meant. I plan on installing gentoo, butwhat is freebsd or openbsd?

i really enjoyed freebsd (the only one i played with.) but, to me, gentoo took most of the good parts from bsd and combined it with linux.

freebsd, openbsd, and netbsd are unix-like operating systems derived from BSD unix. they don't use the linux kernel. they do things a bit differently than they're done in linux-land, but they basically do the same job in a similar way. you can run most of the same applications on both. they aren't linux distributions though... they're a different type of unix-like system. try one and you'll find a lot of similarities.

it's been my experience that freebsd is a very stable system for using as say... a server or firewall, but for desktop functionality, i prefer ubuntu or debian.

why did you choose kde over gnome (or another desktop environment)?

Well the install seemed to go ok but when I booted up I was stuck at command line with no GUI. I got a prompt for my username and password which I entered and nothing much happened...

I typed 'startx' and the screen flooded with loads of crap about skipping usr x11r6 lib modules then I got a fatal server error: no screens found

I googled the error messages and it seems like many people who have the latest ati cards and/or sata drives are having the same problem!

I'm going to give Mepis a try. If that doesn't work, fuck it, I've got better things to do with my time.

I've just started using Fedora Core and it is VERY simple to install and use - by far the easiest distro I've come across to maintain, for a beginner.

Check it out!

I'm lovin' Blag Linux. It's based on fedora but all contained on a cd with everything I use/need. It is known for being a multimedia distro but you can easily add anything you want to it using apt-get. If you would like to see a screen shot of it check this- http://www.crypt.cc/ss/xfce.jpg
thats a screen capture of me creating a graphic, with gimp on blag linux, for use on my forum. If you want to check out blag check http://www.blagblagblag.org for downloads.
I have tryed several versions of unix including: redhat, fedora, storm linux 2000, turbo linux, caldera openlinux, debian, knoppix, mandriva/mandrake, freebsd, openbsd, aix and others but I choose Blag. I am not affiliated with them I just feel like its a distro I would have created had I time to create one. It has everything I want and I havent had to install a thing since I got it.

I had Mandrake installed about a year ago and it was pretty easy to install/configure and a pretty quick download if I remember right. anyway it was pretty easy and i set up apache and some other shit pretty easily. Setting up an apache server and stuff was pretty fun and I made it so I could access all my stuff from school so during computer classes I could download music and whatnot from my home computer.

Actually, now that I think about that, it was more like 2 years ago, after that, I havnt really touched linux/bsd so what do i know...
