To be honest when someone says bacon I think more about Kevin Bacon's penis scene in that one movie than I do about pig. And I think that's a really big achievement.

I always wanted to die as a hero doing something like rescuing trapped bacon from a burning building. In the end, my own killer turned out to be the Wendy’s Baconater. That’s Shakespearean-level irony right there.

...tastemaker culture has existed for much longer than 20 years.
MTV lasted for 45 and most definitely wasn't a tool of public education or the promotion of culturally valuable content.
Music existing independently of rich sponsors only ever happens very intermittently.
It's not the rich in general (there's so many things they're responsible for make no mistake) but the present crop of them in particular.

Whether the wealthy have been patrons of the arts in the past wasn’t the complaint though. Being a patron is quite different from being an investor or owner who has taken control of some field, turned it into an industry, and commodified everything coming out of it.

But now anyone with a PC can make a recording, burn CDs, and upload it to Soundcloud, Bandcamp (or whatever)
and theoretically become wildly successful without any backing.
It is an unprecedented time for cheap music distribution.

But I agree eventually you will need to get signed. (Billie Eilish?)

Recording technology and then radio basically killed "musician" as a stable career choice.  When all music was played live there was hella more paid work for musicians

There is tons of great independent musicians(regardless of genre) around the world actually ,sure mainstream music regardless of genre has turned to shit but thats because those people are Artificially made popular by having billions of dollars of marketing backing them up so they reach a lot more people and often become famous that way ,but still their music is shit and often they dont even compose nor record their own music ,despite all of that there is still a lot of epic musos around the world ,the fact is many are never heard of by the general population and only small pockets of music nerds are aware of them .

That has been happening for decades tho,like in the 60s when recording was made more accessible there where tons of epic independent musos(check out folk or garage genres for example) and great songs made ever since but only now several decades later If you look deep enough youll find their music  released and many often wonder how they never became famous, its because their records where shelved by the record label,the record label went bankrupt,musicians moved into different projects or just because they didnt get marketed by a reputable brand etc

Thats why is so much fun researching for music as if you do you will forever keep finding amazing music no matter what decade you check out.
I imagine thats the same thing that happened with composers back in the Early Music days ,only few ever became widely known despite of music quality and the compositions lost to time .

But the reach was much more limited & the audience was always gonna be smaller than it could be if it had the chance to be shown internationally through television or radio waves.
Allowing musicians to go on world tours that sometimes last for decades.
Then they can retire and take up a residency somewhere and keep playing music for the rest of their lives if they want.

I will say that discovery of musicians is much harder getting your foot in the door is a lot more difficult now than it was back in the day when somebody was just waiting for someone to give them something new to hear.

It is harder to make a living as a musician than it ever has been before but I wouldn't blame a radio for it.
Edit:
I would blame record companies and streaming services more because they are paying musicians a fraction of what they deserve.
