How to proceed - bacterial spawn sent to bulk.

Hi everyone.

On 24 aug I s2b 4 quart jars of albino penis envy brown rice grain spawn.

Unfortunately the culture turned out to have issues and all of my jars smelled like sour mushrooms with thick creamy white mycelial growth. (Bacterial?)

I'm not expecting bountiful flushes but a couple fruits would be great.

Ive taken 2 photos of each shoebox  (flash on and off) and numbered them in the bottom left of the image.

Can anyone tell me

Question 1: what is happening at the bottom of tub 3 at the bottom? How can I prevent it from spreading to the rest of the sub or should I ride it out? I can't tell if it's early trich or cobweb.

Question 2: does tub 2 look ok so far? It's a 1:3 ratio where as tub 3 is 1:2 which explains the slower colonization rate.

Question 3: tub 1 and 4 are clearly lagging, tub 1 basically hasn't changed in weeks. Should I expect anything to change with these two?

Any other general feedback would be greatly appreciated. My friend gifted me a pressure cooker and I'd love to pay him back with some fruits.

All the tubs smell fairly clean surprisingly, except for tub 1 which does smell a bit sour.

After three weeks the entire sub should be colonized. I know APE is slow, but this is too slow.

I've sent many bacterial jars over the years. Any jars that were too bad off typically ended with trich before any fruits developed.

A sour smell + Ice cream texture is about as bad as a bacterial jar can get. My success rate for even just top fruiting a jar with coir is close to 0%.

There's nothing you can really do except for LITFA until trich sets in and then toss the sub. Maybe some fruits will come, but I wouldn't hold out hope

That's ok though, an essential skill for this hobby is being willing to accept failure and move on. Look at your process and see what you can tighten up.

Bacteria usually comes from your innoculant, improper grain prep, or bad technique when innoculating. Why don't you write down what you've done so far and we'll see what can be improved.

But I'll post my answer anyway :hehehe:

Working with unclean spawn is always a gamble, but it is what it is at this point right.

First I would look into finding better coir, yours looks to have a lot of fibers and even husks.

To your questions:

1: The third and fourth tub have some kind of mold, doesn't look like cobweb or trich, but mold nonetheless. You can always try to cut out the bad stuff but for the most part it'll come back.

2: All tubs are slow, which makes sense since you're working with bad spawn. But no it doesn't look okay, not much to do about it now other then wait it out until the green moves in, it starts to smell bad or by any chance you get some fruits.

3: Most likely they're gone.

Are you working with agar? If your goal with these tubs is to get at least some fruits to clone and/or print you can let it play out and hope any fruits will show up. If those tubs were mine I would yeet them into the sun, then again I wouldn't purposely spawn bacterial jars.

Thanks for the replies.

These were done LC to grain and the grain was pc'd, 15psi for 2hrs.

My golden teacher jars failed early (yeast contam) and I later tested the culture on agar which ultimately, the gt plates showed yeast (so did the inoculated grain) and the apes showed pretty weak mycelium. I also had a third genetic from the same person and that contammed instantly as well. Failure all round.

I lost a lot of faith in the cultures I had and so I sought out some new ones and I plan to test those on agar before doing agar to grain (or culture to grain if the plates turn up good).

I guess I'm going to need to learn to pour agar, the process just sounds/seems very nuanced.

Anyways. I'll let these ride out, thanks for the feedback anyways.. tempting to try some peroxide / salt / cutting out but from everything I've seen this has limited chances of helping.

I felt the same way about agar when I first started out, it all felt very overwhelming, but I managed to get what I needed and poured, it went surprisingly well and that despite me being super nervous, sweating and fumbled like a drunken clown the first few times.



If you know this hobby is going to be a part of your life I suggest just getting what you need and start pouring, agar is fun :awedance:

It looks intimidating but it's actually pretty chill. Youtube is full of videos from microbiology professionals demonstrating correct technique for every step of the process.
