PF Tek Troubleshoot

Hi. Just another idiot doing pf tek.

I have three GT-inoculated cakes in my terrarium - due to single port injection nonsense, my jars didn't finish surface-level colonization until 7-8 weeks. Last week, I placed my first cake in the terrarium, followed by a second some two-three days later, and then a third cake, a few days later. Due to the jar designs, each birth was traumatic and messy - I ended up losing some of the grain/mycelium in the process. Upon birthing them, I dunked my cakes for 24 hours and then rolled them in fresh vermiculite.

So, it's been about nine days now, and I see no active hyphal knots/pinning. My cakes seem stable - I don't notice any bad smells or unpleasant textures. What can I do to induce pinning? I'm spraying and fanning four times a day - there's constant moisture on my terrarium walls. My indoor temperature is around 20-24 degrees.

You cakes do look dry to me. That may be your fruiting chamber. You should not be fanning and spraying at all, certainly not four times a day. Just removing the lid four times a day to do that will dry out you cakes.

I don't like lots of holes in my FC, but many people do. I suggest covering the holes, hydrate the perlite, give a final spray, recover the bin, and let nature take it's course.

I hope that 20-24 degrees is celsius, otherwise you are way too cold. Just kidding. :grin:

Thanks for responding, Veggie. I thought spraying/fanning daily was foundational - I've been following 'The Psilocybin Mushroom Bible', which helped me grow via the same method a few years back. My perlite is very coarse - I'm wondering if this is counterproductive in a small terrarium. Perhaps this would affect moisture retention etc. I'm willing to hydrate the perlite again, as non-invasively as possible. The cakes look 'stuck' at this point, yet stable.

I think you will do fine, as I said.

I'm not familiar with your mushroom bible.

For the next time, use the proper size and shape jars with four holes to start. As an alternative to your chamber use the Mateja's Water Tub or fruit individually in a plastic bag, see fahtster's ziplock tek, or crumble your cakes to a coir/verm substrate for a bulk grow.

Hi Freak, I don’t use perlite any more but when I did it was in a much smaller set up with no holes or when I used the take out containers there were already four ventilation holes in the lid.  I just adjusted the lid for ventilation as needed. I never fanned and misted maybe once every few days. I’d recommend taping up the holes and giving your cakes a couple of days to acclimate.
That is some of the largest perlite I’ve ever seen.

if you got another of that same clear plastic tub your using, no holes, put a standing cookie sheet thing at target for cakes to sit on, or just put the cakes on an upside down spare jar. Fill it up and inch with water, put the lid on it upside down, then slightly rotate it to expose just a half inch opening on 3 corners for FAE.
I bet those cakes or your next ones would go nuts. All the cubes ive ever grown have gone crazy for water tub tek with crazy pin sets. Only gotta mist once a day, or once a week for full flushes. Water Tub Tek
