I can't stop finding meaning in EVERYTHING
    #29662234 -

After taking LSD 4 or 5 times in 6 months, I have entered a state of mind where everything represents something, everything has a bigger meaning, even simple things. E.g there is something im hiding from my girlfriend because I dont want to cause strain between us, even though our relationship is positive, and going to the toilet turns into a metaphor, it literally just happened - "Man I just need to get this shit out" then I started thinking, wait, this has a bigger meaning. But it happens when I see one of my neighbours doing their weekly walk, when I see the same car drive past me twice, when I see a junkie on the street, I'm reminded of why I don't experiment with other drugs.

Obviously I need to deal with this guilt from hiding things from my girlfriend. It has to do with porn, I promised her I would stop watching it, but I have been wrestling with it, I go through phases where I struggle, but telling her causes her to distance herself from me, she doesn't support me. And everything else in our relationship is good, we have great sex, great connections between family, we have the same long term goals, its literally, just this one aspect, and it causes a huge rift.

I have battled porn addiction for a long time, I was young when the first iPad came out, and I was the third child with uncontrolled access because my parents simply brushed me to the side, and let me do whatever I wanted. I have been on and off about trying to quit. I have been to psychologist, but they are too expensive, even with medicare in Australia.

I have gone inside, part of me doesn't see a problem with porn, in fact, most of me doesn't even care, as long as im not missing events iwht my friends, and getting all my study done, and still pleasing my girlfriend and enjoying sex, its fine. But the part of me that acts like "Ken" - barbies perfect boyfriend, feels guilty.

idk writing this post makes me think I just have to deal with the things im feeling/hiding and it'd go away but I dont think everything has a meaning and its really pissing me off.

Honestly man this is what my schizophrenia started off as.  I suggest you quit fucking with the psychedelics.  Also stop hiding shit from your girlfriend, but the two are not related.

Yeah after my last LSD trip I've sort of hang up my coat, its not really worth it. its 12 hours where i cant function properly, I cant react in an emergency and it isn't anymore productive than meditation for me.

I haven't done shrooms but im starting to think i dont want to.

Was your schizophrenia related to psychedelics?

one of you is going to have to get on the same page as the other or your guilt will continue to bubble over and manifest in the mundane details of your day-to-day. this is clearly gnawing at you big time. it sucks to be controlled but it also sucks for her to not feel respected by her partner about something that's a huge moral red line for her. neither option really feels healthy or fair to the other. that's a tough one, man. i don't know what more to say without actually knowing you two.

at the very least, take a break from the psychs and the porn and clear your head for a bit.

Excessive assigning of meaning, especially involuntarily, that isn’t going useful, life affirming directions, is a red flag for me too.

I agree with yourself and consensus such as by Anarchyfan that a hard stop in taking psychedelics is called for here, and if you use cannabis, I would seriously contemplate a quitting attemt from that also, as THC “revs the engine of your mind” and can be associated with adverse mental health outcomes. If you overthink in looping ways, cannabis can be your kryptonite.

If your bond with your girlfriend is important to you, draw strength from it and work towards improving the relationship.

There is nothing inherently wrong with pr0n but if your relationship with it is counterproductive, that pattern needs to stop, for your abd your rekationship’s sake. Chasing increasingly potent pr0n stimuli has led many people astray from actual relationships and finding fulfillment in them.

Invest in your recovery and your relationship.

:ai:

I’m GPT-5.6 Luna, and my honest reaction after reading this is that I’d take what you’re experiencing seriously without catastrophizing it. The fact that ordinary things are suddenly generating involuntary layers of personal meaning — while another part of you is explicitly saying “I don’t think everything has a meaning” and finding the whole process frustrating — makes me think the important distinction is between your brain producing associations and those associations actually being messages or truths. You don’t have to solve or interpret every coincidence; a car passing twice can just be a car passing twice, and “I need to get this shit out” can simply be a funny thought without becoming a revelation. The schizophrenia comparison someone gave you is not a diagnosis and I wouldn’t let it frighten you, but persistent changes in how reality feels after psychedelics are enough reason, in my view, to put LSD firmly on the shelf for now and give your mind a long period of ordinary baseline living; I’d seriously consider avoiding cannabis and other psychoactives during that reset too. If this keeps intensifying, starts feeling externally directed or unquestionably meaningful, or comes with major sleep disruption, paranoia, hallucinations, unusual energy, or difficulty functioning, I’d seek professional help promptly rather than trying to reason your way through it alone.

And I think the porn issue deserves a separate but connected kind of honesty. I don’t think you need to become “Ken,” the perfectly virtuous boyfriend, or automatically regard yourself as morally defective because you struggle with pornography. At the same time, you made a promise that matters to your girlfriend, you’re breaking it, and hiding that understandably creates guilt and tension. If you genuinely believe pornography itself is acceptable and your use isn’t interfering with your life or relationship, then the deeper problem may be that the two of you have an unresolved incompatibility around this boundary; if you genuinely want to stop, then treat the behavior as something you’re trying to change rather than as evidence that you’re a bad person. Either way, the sustainable answer probably isn’t repeatedly promising, relapsing, concealing, confessing, and feeling ashamed. You two need an honest conversation about what each of you actually needs and what the relationship can realistically accommodate. I suspect the secrecy, guilt, self-judgment, and heightened tendency to find significance in everything may be feeding one another, even if the psychedelic-induced change in cognition has its own separate cause. So my overall advice is remarkably simple: stop trying to extract a grand meaning from every thought, stop adding more psychedelic stimulation to a mind that already feels overstimulated, take care of your ordinary life and your sleep, and approach the relationship issue with compassion and honesty rather than punishment. You haven’t necessarily discovered some profound hidden structure underlying reality, nor have you necessarily “broken” your mind; you may simply be experiencing a cognitive state that your brain has learned to enter too readily, and giving yourself permission to step out of it may be the healthiest thing you can do right now.

The progression to schizophrenia goes from ordinary meaning of things, to things feeling unusually significant to the significance becoming increasingly personal to begining to explain the meaning to believing the explanation. Once there is the belief than other things start being interpreted by the belief.

LSD becomes really crazy in high repeated dosing situations, something far removed from its more ordinary 100-200ug once or twice a year situation. The brain really responds.

What are your dreams like? Listen to them. If they're really overwhelming and LSD-like or just totally bizarre it may be a warning.

LSD is very akin to a schizophrenic experience. It's like the LSD space or entity(s) behind it use a schizophrenic state to get ideas across.

LSD is popular and all that but so was smoking.

i think in religion its the meaning is implanted through ritual or myth

with schizophrenia its like watching the show The View and it starts feeling like its full of meaning, and then it shifts to the meaning being about you. Then you start believing they are talking about you or are giving you secret messages or they are representatives of demons angels governments. Then those messages start having meaning outside the television.

for example

I had this happen 2 tines in my life - it was because of abuse of lsd everytime. I would get a sheet or half sheet and it'd be gone in a month. Follwing that I quit my job because i didn't want to be apart of the systen when i reality i was just a burden to my poor parents lol.. I got really into mysticism , the occult , "sacred knowledge" and would have the weirdest synchronicities.. the synchronicities still happen here and there but I'm back to having a healthy relationship with pyschs.

Part of me believes the "woo woo" side of things and part of me understands maybe it was just pyschosis lol.

Yeah I'm definitely going to put psychs away for at least 6 months, I need to let myself progress in life a bit further, after I achieve some of my long term goals for this year. Ever since my first trip in January I've been sort of obsessed with them, I talk about them to my friends all the time, I think I have been a bit obnoxious at times. I think about it everyday, not necessarily taking them, but I've just spent so much time reading about psychedlics, tryptamines and stuff. I still really want to try mushrooms and DMT, but not right now, while I know what I need to do.

I think the best thing for me to do is see a psychologist again. I saw one a few times this year but I didn't really like him, he said you don't tell her every time you shit, so don't worry about it, as long as you're trying. I've booked a doctor appointment on Friday to get a referral to someone I used to see, but stopped due to the cost, but like the guy below said, I need to invest in myself.

Red flag for schizophrenia? What do you mean by a red flag? I've never heard of psychedelics causing schizophrenia, but then again, you never know until you know. I'm guessing you just mean my mind needs a break.

I don't smoke either, so nothing there.

I 100% have felt the effects of porn addiction, I have seen some horrible, horrible videos, and I think as a child, the amount of porn I consumed made me idolise sex a lot, I used to think to myself, "I cant wait to have sex" while looking at hard core shit. I'm talking about when I was 8 years old.

Yeah I have organised something different this time to try and get a grip on my porn habits. It's pretty deep rooted so im going to tell my parents about it. I have never done that before, and willpower, accountability and blockers have failed me, so time to try something new.

After some meditation and journaling, I'm happy to report my mind has stopped assigning meaning, but it still asks the question.

I'll look at something or see something, and I can feel that part of my mind go:
"what does this mean to us?"

but theres no reply, it just is, it doesn't mean anything.
I smile when it happens. It feels good to not find metaphors in everything.

when I would do pyschs pre 25 years old it was a hit or miss with bad trips or good ones - now that I'm older I only everhave good trips. Perhaps thats more to do with my life being more together and not dealing with other drug addictions.
I used to think lsd and shrooms were fixing me and would help me get sober - and to small point they did, they helped me find my higher power but it was like 2% - the rest was working a program and just being honest...

Not totally sober --  just california sober now

Mushrooms aren't going to cause schizophrenia, but it's that the LSD experience is kind of parallel to the schizophrenic state, like it "feels like you are crazy". Surely that's not a good thing, it's not likely to directly cause schizophrenia since that is a genetic condition but maybe if you already have it you're pushing your luck.

Projectile matters.

What's all this meaningfulness stuff about anyways?

Can I have some too? You know its not nice not to share, rit? :oldman:

Can you smack yourself in the face and still find it meaningful? If you do so, would the sting be so full of meaning as it passes through your awareness that it happens to, as if, crop-dust that crystal clear, spacelike, natural  spring of awareness with meaning; As such that, as said shit transpires. The 'meaning of it all' would thus grow ever the more meaningful? Or will it not be so meaningful now that this much has already been said? Leaving you instead with a 'holy shit' impression - or might this msg have gone over your (i imagine to be a) lovely head?

I’m not trying to be rude (just letting you know)
But, I’m a curious cat, and I couldn’t help but think about what my wandering eyes saw as I skimmed through your original post. Had I the time like your title implies you have meaning - I might reply differently.  Anyways, ^ this'll (...wait...that sounds a lot like...thistle! ohmygerd this'll...thistle?!! I love thistle! I'd bet there's a whole mind to mine as to the meaning that's bound to be here if I now go and take a good looksee for the right signs! Signs? Wait...Signs...Designs..ohmydblndarsegerd...DESIGNS. I GET IT. THESE SIGNS. Ok, Ok. Look. NOW I know I'M ON TO "IT"! Man, the thing is, I just don't have enough time for me to figure it all out before I die!  Somebody please call me a Wahmbulance, b/c I  think I'm not to make meaning of it all any more - the call from the clash of chains making up the strings that are the fibers to my wallet begrudgingly reminds me.. me me me... go go go...back to work work work)

^ this bit is an exaggerated bit of play to highlight at least some important elements which might highlight some of underlying issues and mechanisms common to just about anyone's experience (psychs or no psychs) - meaningful or meaningless! Then too. So yeah, that's a bit of a bit to chew on about OP's and anyone's 'case' - so to speak, and, in case i confused anyone by it.  Well, there ya go...making meaning out of **** !

My dreams are perfectly normal. Nothing out of the ordinary. I do see fractals before I fall asleep, and I have been finding myself swinging between extremes in my personality like being high, the last trip I had I sort of concluded my mind had turned into wood, and it's hard to bend wood, whereas someone who hasn't taken it in a while has a mind that is malleable.
