Re: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Shroomery [Re: BeefExtreme] * 1

I've been thinking of getting serious and following the information contained in this guide, but its a little overwhelming. I have to admit I've never ever handled shrooms in their raw form, so some of these questions may be stupid. Okay here goes:

1. Is there a rough cost breakdown for all of this? From making the plates to processing into pills I would like to know what I need to spend in advance. Let's assume that all I have lying around is a screw driver and a pair of scissors. I'm guessing several hundred dollars in all.

2. How do I know when the shrooms ready to harvest, and how do I harvest them? Do I just yank them out of the substrate, or do I cut them with an X-Acto knife?

3. I don't really understand the first section with the petri dishes. So, I am supposed to buy sterilized agar dishes, and transfer cuts of mycelium into them? So how do I make the original dish, and how many petri dishes should I colonize?

It is a lot of information and yes it can seem a little overwhelming.

Way back in chapter one, it is recommended that first timers use the PF-Tek. Do that. Follow the link.

Back in my day everyone started with agar, it was the beginner method, as there was no PF-Tek yet. Now there is and it really is a foolproof method. Read it over a few times so you know what's what and then just follow the directions and before you know it you will have yourself mushrooms.

A few tips:
use the half pint wide mouth jars, if you can't find them go smaller rather than larger.

you don't need a pressure cooker, but get one anyway. You can even find used ones for cheap.

you don't need a flow hood. Use a SAB. They are easy to make from a bin or you can even slap one together from a cardboard box.

use a quality cubensis spore syringe and shake the hell out of it to start and flame sterilize per instructions.

once the jars are inoculated, leave them be. resist the urge to move them around, inspect them, shake them, etc. they will grow just fine without all that.

You can figure out the upfront costs easy enough and it is surprisingly less than you think and the cost goes down as most everything is reusable.

Just follow the directions exactly, it's all there, and in 4-5 weeks you'll have your first mushrooms and enough spores to last you a lifetime.

Plus it is a lot of fun. Good luck!

Welcome to the shroomery!:cool::mushroom2:

1. If you are going straight to agar and bulk: Pressure cooker: $90 for a 16qt presto without pressure dial. $90 for a 500ct cell treat 10x90mm
3-10ct telephone agar and briess light malt is about $30, scalpel and blades another $30, big roll of parafilm $35 SAB (home made) 10-$20. A pack of 1 qt jars $20, 50lbs of wheat from the feed mill $13. Sticker filters for the lids $12 for a 72 pack. 2 500ml media bottles $40 Total is about $360

There's are various brands and way this can be cheaper and more expensive. I'm simply detailing what I use and it's cost

If starting with pf tek
$20 for wide mouth half pints, $10 for verm, $10 for the flour. $30 for a pot to steam them in with a good lid, $20 for a decent LC or spore syringe. $10 for home made SAB
Total is about $100

2. Twist and pull, cut the bottoms off and dehydrate at 150/160 for 24 hours. Penis envy lineage, wait until marshmallow soft, everything else, when most the veils break. If you harvest late and spores drop it's a non issue. They will just look less appetizing and taste a lil worse.

3 mix media, ingredients in media bottle, microwave until boiling, PC for 30min with 10 min of venting. Wait until between 110-130 degrees, pour bottles into dishes in SAB. Wait to cool and inoculated with spore or LC. Transfer from leading edge of mycelium into new plate. Do this thrice or until growth appear even without contamination. Then use that to inoculated your jars

Please keep us posted if you have any further questions :mushroom2:

I read the McKenna brothers' book on growing (here, there's a PDF!), and it was a little jolting how little has changed overall. Recipes for potato and malt agar, same. SAB, same. Grain prep, ditto. There's been a lot of changes in spawning to bulk, yes. I forget we have growers whe predate PF!

I want to develope the 'rainless' tub lid.

I want to do BEEFCAKE version 2.0 and see if I can do it right this time.

Thank you MR Beef for your insightful "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Shroomery". As you can see I am new to the Shroomery and I've been researching and growing mushrooms for about 8 months now. I've had some success albeit numerous failures as well. I have grown GT, PE, Yellow Umbo, Lions Mane, Oysters and a few others. I am also intrigued by Pans and Subs and noticed you have quite a gallery of beautiful grows. Could you please help me with a grow log for pans and subs? I appreciate what you are doing and any help you can throw my way.
