Because the primary function of your consciousness (cognition) is conceptualization.

We conceptualize things like up, down, past, future, blue, yellow, names, etc. because they are useful to us...but they're ultimately just abstracts, not actuals.

They're a function of your consciousness, not the other way around.

Your ability to conceptualize the past and future is a function of your consciousness.

Again, when is consciousness?

In your dreams at night, YOU are the container as well as all it contains; all the people, places, dramas, etc. - are happening WITHIN your consciousness/SELF.

You ARE the projector, as well as all it projects.

Extrapolate this to "waking" "reality".

distracting changes, which keep us alive, trigger responses from memory.
whatever we were doing 'in the moment' is wrapped in the past memory, and replaced by the next thing that seems significant.
this process is equally 'eternal' as the 'now'
