Snails/slugs/cows I've heard snails/slugs can cause forced mating of spores xd though yea still has to have right conditions past mating to also survive/colonize

Sounds like a bad gamble lol

Edit. Dang dv8 where's the tek :mushroomgrow::eek:

Any other suggestions?

I finally have some GT going again and have a bunch of different tests planned for them. Drying temps, tea stuff, things like that.

Would be neat if you dehydrated to cracker dry and do a potency test, then leave some in a jar without silica until they got bendy and then dehydrate to cracker dry again and do a new test :strokebeard:

Just realized that I would have to do this anyway. If I don't dry it back down before testing, I would not be able to determine the correct amount of material to use because the water weight would throw off the calibration. So consider this suggestion as the plan.

What are aborts??

This subject is so frustrating to me as a noob because everyone talks about it like it's so obvious, and like apparently it is just not to me, I guess lol. I spent a lot of time searching to find a main post about fruiting and aborts, but failed to find any answers.

I know im supposed to keep it short, but to elaborate more on my specific question, this is my first ever flush, and my mushrooms grew super slow, IMPORTANT: all the mushrooms were growing at different times, so there were mushrooms that were fully mature with their veil broken, mushrooms half mature, little pins, and everything in between, with impressively similar distribution (Ive also had a hard time finding people with simialr flushes). This was with both my tubs. For one I harvested all, the other I only harvested the fully mature ones, and some of them had already dropped their spores, then left the rest that weren't mature. MY QUESTION: why can't you do that? or idk, I guess why don't people do that?

Here are pictures from that tub a few days after I harvested the fully mature ones, I also picked out the nasty ones (Aborts??), you can also tell the substrate is a bit mangled from the initial harvest.

There's a big splotch of spores in the right corner, and then a big hunker in the back, thats the biggest of the flush by far, but besides that like whats wrong with this??
Sorry for being long. I would love to make something like this a main post, but the subject just seems so obvious to anyone who has ever touched the forum, and I'm over here just in the dark.
Thanks!!

Abort. A mushroom pin that stops developing and dies. Sometimes is reabsorbed by the colony, sometimes eaten by something else. Often are the result of bad conditions and/or contamination. They are unavoidable to some extent, but if most of your pins abort you are doing something wrong.

You absolutely can harvest as they mature. But it is way better to have a super thick pinset mature together and harvest all at once.

How does this grain bag look? Does anyone see any sign of contamination? Would you say it's 100% colonized? There is an unexpected amount of water in the bag I'm not sure why, I got it for free as part of a promotion. I wasn't expecting much but to my untrained eyes it looks promising

Awesome thank you!
I still have many questions, and I just stumbled upon the noob forum. I was thinking about turning this into a main post on that forum so I could branch the conversation. Should I?

Grains pushed up on bag and your mycelium looks a little like toothpaste. Excessive moisture.

Getting it free as part of a promotion.

Doubtful you will see anything grow from that except for more bacteria. If you are dead set on trying for something, open the top of the bag and add a 2-3 inch layer of field capacity coir on the top of the grain. Do not break it up anymore! Seal it back up and wait for it to colonize, if it does.

If you do agar, it is possible to clean the culture up. Make a trench plate, 1 grain and scrape some mycelium off, add it to the plate. Wait for the myc to jump over the trench and take that myc to a cabin plate. I would do a water agar plate after that, then run the trench and cabin again. It's a lot of work and time but it can work. Bacteria is actually pretty easy to clean up, mold is the hard one. At least for me it is.

No harm in trying even if the only fruit harvested is information and experience.

It is textbook, and multiple. Symptoms: bare glossy grains, excessive condensation, spiky erratic growth, these are all factors that make less difference in  isolation but when considered together are tell-tale, to anyone that has grown more than a few failed grows.

I've read somewhere else in the form that something a lot of people seem to do with contaminated grains or spent substrates is throw them outside in a garden bed or even just a hole in the ground, if that's what I decide to do, would you still recommend mixing cior with it or should I just throw it all to forget about it?

Yep, throw it outside and throw a casing of coir and some water on it like this
