Is it time to pick the remaining mushrooms?

Some of the mushrooms from this monotub have been harvested because a few of the veils were breaking. Do you think the other smaller mushrooms and pins that are still in my monotub will keep growing or since the veils have broken on a couple does that mean they’re all stopped and i should pick them all off?? I’ve seen some people saying that flipping the substrate after the first harvest will give you a much better second flush and i’ve seen others saying that that’s too hard on the cake. Let me know your thoughts please.

You a re picking too early. let the caps open a bit those are all still growing.

edit: Thoese were still pins, the veil breaking is really seeing the veil stretching underneath the cap, almost coming off.

It's not a number of days thing, it is entirely to do with the mushroom itself and learning when the right time is for that variety.. For traditional cubensis, especially ones that release spores, you want to harvest before it sporulates.

Most people do it as soon as the caps are broken from the veil or slightly before. Certain varieties might have different timings, like Yetis or PEs.

Here is an old pic, you can see the veil hanging on a few of them towards the middle left. That is what breaking from the veil means. This is also around the time where you would take some caps for doing spore prints.



In this scenario, I would harvest the ones that are opened first, put them in a paper bag in the fridge, and then probably harvest the others later at night or the next day since they seemed close.

Congrats on your tub that looks like a nice pinset.

We impose our own sense of order on our substrates. When to pick, what constitutes a flush, how to try for canopies, etc.

But that's not how the fungus approaches things. Sometimes we manage to narrow down genetics in such a way that everything will mature at once, but there's no real signal going out telling all the fruits to stop growing at any particular time. Things that might influence fruits to stop growing include getting crowded out by a canopy of mature fruits, running out of water, and bacterial infections. It's often EASIER for us just to rip everything out at once, but healthy undisturbed pins in an adequately hydrated substrate will usually just chug along and fill in the space after more mature fruits are picked.

I can't tell you whether those fruits will keep growing, my guess is probably. Unless you're seeing large numbers of aborts in that substrate. But those don't look to me like they're gonna abort.

I'm of two minds on the statement that you picked too early.

On the one hand, I'm inclined to agree- those fruits definitely had a lot more growth they would have put on, and when people say "before the veils break" they mean something way further along than what you've got there. And yeah, you should probably let your fruits go longer until you see exactly what all the developmental stages look like. Also, picking AFTER the veils break is no big deal. Spores are messy, but don't hurt anything. I think some of the idea behind that concept is that the fruits will stop growing and start senescence at that point, but that's not true for all genetics either. Grow enough, and there will always be a few fruits that take you by surprise. Long stringy monster stems over a sea of dropped spores. That sort of thing.

On the other hand, pins and immature fruits work just fine, and it's your grow and you can do whatever the hell you want. There's no such thing as an "unripe" psilocybe. Just one that could have put on more weight. I actually like the flavor and overall aesthetics of immature fruits more. And there's nothing quite like popping a few fresh pins. Do be careful, though. They can be a lot stronger per unit weight.
