Weird - so it seems to attract rodents/animals?  Might have to think of some precautions to take
I think I have a really good location though - Right under a cluster of fairly large Rhododendron bushes and about a 5 minute walk to the ocean.:toadwalk:

4/13/15

Finally made a few outdoor patches under rhododendron bushes bushes.  The soil around the bushes consists of old, broken down mulch/wood chips from the previous years.  At this point I'm happy to pass it off to mother nature :sporedrop:

Here is a pic of one of the beds.

It's best to colonize wood chips with your grain spawn before the mycelium goes into an outdoor patch.  Colonized wood chip spawn as opposed to colonized grain spawn is impossible for rodents to make an easy meal out of.

Also, to keep the kitties and other small animals from using your patch site as a restroom, cover the patch in clear plastic sheeting with slits cut into the plastic for gas exchange.  The reason it's best to use clear plastic sheeting is for the allowance of ambient light to hit your colonizing patch increasing mycelial vigor.  The plastic sheeting will also serve as a sort of casing cover keeping/maintaining the moisture content of the substrate at acceptable levels for the colonization of mushroom mycelium.




Opaque plastic sheeting is not good to use.  Opaque plastic sheeting collects heat, and blocks ambient light from hitting your patch. 

It's not too late in the year to begin some more culture, get some sawdust or woodchips colonized, and spawned to an outdoor patch, and STILL get fruits this year.  The later in the year you plant your patch, though, the higher of a spawn to bulk ratio you will have to inoculate your patch with in order to see fruits the fall.

You should just get all types of wood and bury it around in segregated places close enough to the mycelium to get to it. But for more exotic woods like eu alypfus that smell harsh I would avoid. and get prints from fruits from Each pach and label the prints doood.I'm almOst certain they'll grow on Douglas fir. Also dOnt but all your eggs in one basket, make many patches dewd!!!! Namaste

wow this looks amazing, I definitely hope to at least have your mycelium luck when I finally grow me some wood lovers. Hopefully my first grow will give me confidence.
