Advice on almond agaricus bed.

Hey all. Looking to get an outdoor almond agaricus bed going. First time grower so not sure what I'm doing haha.



I've got my horseshit sorted and leaving it to dry for a bit. My spawns been sitting indoors for a month and a half now and it looks raring to go. However nighttime temps are predicted to go down to 4 celsius (39 fahrenheit) this week and I'm not sure that's optimal for this particular agaricus to get started. I'm in zone 8b, should I wait a bit longer or just get 'em in there?

Also how important is pasteurizing the substrate? I'm not really equipped to do it properly, and it's going to be outdoors anyway. I did see some dung cups in the manure already so that's not ideal I guess.

Ah also, unrelated:

This mycelium?

Trying to make some sawdust spawn (lion's mane) but the sawdust had some green mold on it before I sterilized it. Anyway some of it must've survived as the whole bucket turned into a warzone. I picked most of the green mold out but there was barely any mycelium left. Seem to have bounced back though, or do you reckon this is just some random mold that managed to get in?

Pasteurizing manure would be better than not but I bet if you spawn high enough it won't matter. Is the almond agaricus commonly found on poo or would a compost be better?

Imo 39f won't be too detrimental to an agaricus. It'll slow it down but it'll slow down competitors as well.

As far as I know they don't grow on manure in nature, but the vendor I got the spawn from told me straw bedded manure is fine. I do have some finished compost on hand but not a ton. I could mix some in there, is that a good idea?
There is for sure some other agaricus in my compost pile is my concern though, saw a pretty big one sprout up last autumn.

The compost sounds good but It's all going to be a bit risky without pasteurizing

Alright done and dusted. After having dehydrated the manure I brought it back to field capacity with boiling water, hopefully that did something. Let me know if that was dumb or not, just trying to figure this out.

Given no rainfall, about how often should you water one of these beds?

If nothing else the winecap mycelium in the wood chips next door seems to be happy.

Just an update in case anyone with similar questions stumbles on this.

Ey my first mushrooms.

Keeping it watered in this bitter drought has been a hassle. They're quite tasty!

That said I do have some invaders as well.

Probably the lax pasteurization. Though it did take at least.

If I want to get rid of these competing fungi how should I go about it? Dig up any substrate where I see unwanted fruiting bodies sprout up?

Also reckon I could grow something useful in the casing layer, something with shallow roots? Could sow some sylvetta or rusabi. Or would that mess with the agaricus?

Hey those uninvited guests, if I'm not mistaken those are banded mottlegill right? Common on horse manure as I understand. They're not psilocybes but they do contain a moderate amount of psylocibin.
Wasn't planning on partaking but they did just show up and insist on themselves... Hypothetically what would safe mild dose be?

No idea because I don't know the psilocybin content. Couldn't recommend eating them without a very positive id, really cool if they are tho

Supposably about a third of liberty caps, if they are Panaeolus cinctulus. Only reason I know about them is from reading up on bisporus production practices, they are known as weed Panaeolus because they're supposed to often pop up in agaricus beds. And sure enough there they are. :laugh:

Going to have to bump this one more time for another question, in case someone can advise me.

Alright fungus gnats. Saw some larvae in mushrooms I harvested just now. Tiny translucent maggots in the base of the stem, not very appetizing. There isn't much I can do to keep them out of an outdoor bed, but is there anything I can/should do to mitigate them, or will natural predators sort them out?

And regarding natural predators, do you reckon they'll eventually invite themselves in or should I be looking at sourcing some to introduce to the substrate?

Someone in another thread recommended BTI for me if I wanted to get serious about fungus gnats.

Neem would probably work but might impact the predators that you want too. I know neem is toxic to the larvae, and to the adults it would slow their growth.

Interesting, do you know if the bacteria would persist in the substrate or would it take regular application?

Was looking into ordering some nematodes for a modest price, I'll need to do some research if BTI is a better alternative.
