pasturize woodchips? ( and oysters on manure)
    #1777649 - 08/04/03 10:13 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

hello, sorry about the spelling.

i was wondering if you can get away with microwaving woodchips for white oyster. i've read that you must sterilize woodchips before innoculating them with anything, but i want a second opinion.

i wonder if you can grow oysters off horse shit?

your answers would be much appreciated.

You should be able to pasteurise wood chips in the oven.
But another way is to ferment them, just place the chips in water and
put in the oven at the lowest setting 55?c and allow to slowly cook for 12 hours, oysters do well on straight straw, and as there is
plenty of undigested cellulose in horse poo it could work, but youed be better of with straw or wood chips or a mix of both imo.

i don't have access to straw, but i do have several sacks of horse shit which is why i'm trying it. thank you for your information, i might try the fermentation thing, i innoculated a bag of microwaved woodchips too see what might happen, and did some microwaved horse shit too. I'll tell you how it works out.

hey, i tried the woodchips. I fruited them out of the bag in a make shift terrarium for oysters. its this tray of perlite with a container over it with a 240V fan that blows through this filter wool for 15 minuites every hour, and a bubbler. Anyway it got some green on the surface which I killed with some decolourized iodine and peroxide. The thing fruited, but unfortunately the fruits had bad-ass Co2 and went all skinny, so I threw it out. The oysters on manure are looking good though, a wee bit mutie from Co2, but still edible.

Looking forward to seeing how the poo goes, its not the normal substrate, but does contain cellulose, so keep us updated :-)

Have you thought of just using straw? Thats the more normal
substrate, good work on the wood chips :-)

Im doing the same but with fermented hazel wood, i'll post my results in this thread, they are colonising well at the moment.

what do the horses use for bedding -wood chips?
if so mix the horse shit and the bedding wood chips, and you'll have a winner
