Outdoor Stropharia--pasteurize wood chips bed?
#5560944 - 04/26/06 10:50 PM (17 years, 9 months ago) |

I'm going to give an outdoor stropharia patch a go. I'll have 21 quarts of grain spawn to use, so, will I need to pasteurize the bed of woodchips and shavings before laying it down into the hole I'm going to dig or can I just toss it all down without messing with pasteurization?
Thanks.

You shouldn't have to if you are using fairly fresh chips.

Also, should I spawn the grain to the woodchips/shavings, then water all of it, or should I soak the chips before putting them down? I've never tried something like this before. Thanks.

Soaking them before would guaranteee a good moisture from the start on.

Thanks, guys.
Would adding hydrated lime to the water while the woodchips soaked be of any benefit?

It's not a good idea to inoculate the bed with the grain spawn, i'tll attract birds, and all kind of small animals. You'll have better results using your grain spawn as a transfer sub. to sawdust transfer sub. to finaly end in the bed. Just soak the fresh wood chips 36 hours, and make your bed with.
Good luck

They will if you make the final sub. with less compact ligning sub. as only wood chips. Mix cut grass, leafs, sawdust, wood chips, different kind of ligning matter. Don't pasterize them, just soak them in a clean container, and make your bed (don't add nutrients, you'll attract small animals). After a high inoculation rate (20%)with the sawdust spawn, cover with a wet cardboard under light shade. Take off the cardboard (before a rain in summertime)when you'll see the myc. near the top. That way, you'll be amaze how easy stropharia is to grow. If your willing to wait to get more mush., make other beds using this final sub. as a transfer sub.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice, man. I'm really surprised how fast this species colonizes.
Do you have to agitate the beds after you spawn the colonized sawdust to the fruiting bed? Stamets said something like they like "disturbed" wood matter.

I do not. I mix the sawdust spawn evenly in the bed. You'll disturb next year when you'll add more stuff in it.

Never had a problem before using grain spawn before on out-door beds. Regular dirty mulch that costs 12$ a cubic yard works great for rugosoannulata. Picked a plastic shopping bag yesterday full of tight closed caped buttons. Then drove around with a opened large cap on the car as my way of saying thank you.
