Experience with FP stropharia?
    #4204093 - 05/21/05 06:04 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I inoculated a bed with 5 lbs of their chips over a month ago with about a 15% inoculation rate. The bed is made up of sawdust, straw, and wood chips and has been watered well and is shaded. However, when digging down to sample, I detect very little rhizomorph growth (not even sure if its stropharia or other fungus). According to GGMM, these should be quite aggresive and detectable within 3 weeks. Anyone else had experience with their chip spawn? How can I tell for sure if it's taking?

I know my friend is dealing with stropharia right now and he told me they are to be treated like reg cubies.

I had tried some from them several years ago & I did not have very good results, but I can't rule out that it may have been partially my fault too. About a month ago I had inoculated approx 2.5lb to an area of 12ft x 3ft x 8in (maple wood chips, soil & covered with straw) that I had purchased from a different supplier. I had been checking on it every now & then & I can definitely tell that it is making progress in its growth.

I failed with their kit several years ago. No growth at all. And it took forever for it to arrive in the mail. I called them to find out what the delay was and they said they were having problems with the culture. I just assumed I did something wrong until I got a wild culture and watched it tear through my compost pile with big ropey rhizos. I also noticed that TMC and GGMM says it grows anemically on agar and grain but the strain I am working with has no such problems. I'd call FP and get a replacement, good luck!

IIRC, GGMM states something about the bed colonising fastest when it is routinely disturbed.

I love Mr. Stamets, but I have had terrible luck with FP's "woodchip spawn" stropharia. I attempted to start 2 outdoor beds with the stuff, and both failed miserably, with zero recognizable growth. For kicks I attempted an agar isolation, and got an extremely anemic, slow-growing isoate that couldn't even colonize sterilzied sawdust to completion.

I have a feeling that his spawn lab is expanding out his isolates to the point of senenscense to maximize yield and profit, but who knows.
