I am actually considering adding tractor trailer binders on the lid as a fail safe lmao :rofl2:

But from all my calculations and research, it won’t be a catastrophic failure like people imagine, what will realistically happen, is the hinges or lid will warp and dish and the gasket will fail and it will dump pressure long before a catastrophic explosion happens

You can stand inside it?? Haha awesome. I like the dual safety valves. Will you have a rubber plug safety as well?

Love to see this, thanks for sharing. I wouldn't trust myself with this kind of project lol

No rubber plug, the 2 blow off valves you see are both calibrated to 20 psi and should be more then sufficient to release pressure in the event of thermal runaway!!!

However in the event that it doesn’t, I have a manual ball valve vent at the top right that will have a chain operated dead fall in the event that that 2 relief valves fail, it can be safely opened via an overhead chain that I can pull from the outside of the cinder block building, it will also have an over pressure alarm that will sound if it hits 25psi

The vessel itself will be water pressure tested up to 30pso before operation

Nice. I think you'll be fine. I think electric heat is much less likely to cause any runaway shenanigans than fire.

Agreed, I will also have a PID controller and a separate throw handle disconnect

Idk man i feel like ive been edging myself the moment i saw the lid open and can actually see it taking shape

Right now I’m struggling with correct bolt hole geometry, so if there’s any machinists or math wizards here I’d love to pick your brains

What are your thoughts on the bolt placement? What I would do is divide 360 by # of bolts. Let's say 24 because it gives a whole number of 15. That would be 15 degrees spacing per bolt hole. Make a template and use a protractor to mark every 15 degrees from the center point. Now draw  lines from the center to each 15° Mark and continue that line so it will intersect the center of the flange and that's where id put the bolts.

I was able to get proper layout, i figured out my mistake, sometimes it’s the simple things that trip me up :facepalm3::rofl2:

I was using the cord length measurement from bolt to bolt on the center line instead of the outer edge :rolleyes:

I was supposed to swing an arch from the outside edge with the divider, so I ended up losing a 1/16 of an inch each mark by measuring it from the center line instead and that compounded with each mark so my end bolt landed too close to the beginning bolt


Anyways I got it laid out perfectly now that I figured out where I went wrong!!!

Managed to get the bolt pattern laid out correctly, center punched and piloted all the holes, and then finished off 6 out of 24 of the 5/8th holes then I bent the bit and badly damaged my $300 drill :spank:

Surprisingly yes but it really blows as a tradesman because our tools are our bloodline, and it’s only a year old, I might see if I can have the manufacturer refurbish it for a cheaper price then buying a new one but I’ll have to keep using it for the time being, it has a bit of a wobble and the battery faces left and the chunk faces right because the handle got warped, it had so much torque when I lost control it spun out and cocked the handle again the lid of the autoclave pining it and distorting the drill, I should have grabbed a picture lmao :lol:

It still works just sloppy now

Idk if you can see it in that pic but the battery is offset from the chuck and the handle is split :facepalm3:


On a positive note, i grabbed a step bit and it made everything so much smoother, if i used that to start with i probably wouldn’t have maimed my drill lmao

All holes are correctly bored and all 5/8ths grade 5 bolts are seated, i torqued them down today to get a good mock up, 3 holes had some gaps so i had to bend the flanges a bit to get a good mating surface


I needed to get a bolt catch tray to hold all my hardware and impact socket / wrenches when it’s being loaded or serviced, I decided against tack welding the bolts in the bottom flange like studs because the lid is so damn heavy and if I drop it to close it even from 6 inches it will chew up and damage the threads if it’s not perfectly aligned so I’ll just have a catch trough to hold the lose bolts and tools between runs

I’m thinking about buying a digital torque reader for my impact to make loading more efficient but price wise that might be a future investment lol

Next step is to resurface and polish the interior flange faces so I can finally mock up my gasket

Then I need to put thread sealer on all my thread parts and i should be ready for hydrostatic pressure testing!!! This is exciting news I’m finally getting to the end of the project, I do plan to paint it but not until it’s functional, also need to put some diamond plate wheel wells to act as heat shields for the tires so they don’t bubble or blister from cooking

Cut the gasket today and made a punch tool from ground down 1/2 emt conduit, also polished the inside of the flanges to make a better mating surface

Ended up getting caught in a down pour this evening trying to finish up

Well guys it’s been 20 days since the last update, this heat and work load has made it difficult to get this tank finished but, I was able to get back at it for the past couple days, I ground down the rough edges and weld beads on the inner rims, then sanded and painted the inside of each flange with a brown primer, let that dry, and then used automotive weather stripping adhesive to mate the rubber gasket I cut out to the bottom flange of the main tank body so now I don’t have to worry about match marks or re-aligning it every time, it stays in place and will be easy to replace in the future because i only put dabs of sealant every 4 inches, then tonight I was actually able to do a preliminary hydrostatic pressure test after putting “Oatey Great White”  liquid pipe thread sealant rated up to 3,000psi on all the threaded fittings which was a lot lol

I was able to get it up to 20 psi before the relief valves did their job and popped at the 20psi preset, I decided to leave it at 15 psi overnight, so I’m hoping it’s still above 10 psi when I come back tomorrow to check, if that holds overnight then I’ll run one more test and remove the 20psi relief valves and cap it off and then run it up to 40psi, if that goes well then it’s on to paint and wiring!!!!

I think i might also want to add in heat shields around the wheel wells
