First Grow {Jack Frost}

Hello, I'm brand new to all of this. This will be my first post! I've been poking around the Shroomery for a while now and I can see how valuable it is so I figured I'd get myself involved by posting about by first grow.

I originally got started with this Jack Frost grow from a grow kit. It came with a bag of grain for spawning and a separate bag of manure/coir mix to spawn to. I got the kit and inoculated the grain bag with a LC from a separate vendor. After inoculation i found the Shroomery and read about better ways to get started.

Regardless, after learning more I decided to make a monotub instead of using the bags that came with the kit. Once the spawn was fully colonized I spawned to the tub you see in these pics. Obviously im not 100% but I dont think there was any major contamination. S2B was on 5-7-26 and these pictures are from 5-28-26.

The monotub got colonized fairly quickly and I saw the first pins a few days before these pictures. Since the pics have been taken the Four pins in the tub have started to grow more. Im a little bummed that only four pins are growing right now, still hopeful I'll get some more on this first flush. At the very least I hope I get a bigger second flush. I have noticed in some place the myc has a slight Blue/Green color to it. Really hoping its just bruising of some kind and not contam, but im not sure. I could try to take better pics of the color if anyone thinks i should be concerned.

Either way, I just poured some agar plates the other day and it was mostly successful. I think the only mistake I made was that I made the agar late at night so i just put it in the fridge and planned to pour the next day. When I reheated the agar I dont think it all got hot enough because there were some lumps when i poured. Not sure if its a real issue to have lumpy plates, but so far nothing has grown on them so im hopeful that I sterilized them properly. Plan to clone on a few plates and try to get some spores growing on others.

We'll see how things go, I'll try to post some updates as things progress. Im excited to be part of the community and I cant wait until I can start trading spores and expanding my colonies.

Yay pins! and looks like you're about to have many more. I've poured chunky plates due to getting high and forgetting while cooling that ended up fine.

Thanks for the reply's! Here's a quick update. Still no more pins than before, the current ones are getting much bigger now. I've included a picture of the blue coloring I mentioned above, any thoughts on that?

That's just a little bit of bruising, likely from either drying out getting bumped, sometimes bruising can indicate contamination but that doesn't look like it from what I can tell. Your surface looks good, just make sure to maintain tiny water beads if thet aren't already there.

I'm happy to see you getting some mushrooms! Second flush should be better:):mushroom2:

Good call getting into into agar, that's the ticket. you'll have more mushrooms than you know what to do with in no time :mushroom2:

Well that's good to hear, probably from drying out then. I've been having a hard time getting my tub dialed. I have 6 two inch holes drilled which I think is too much. I'm using micopore to cover the holes and I have like 3 layers on each hole to stop it from drying it and it still doesnt seem to want to maintain droplets on the surface. For sure going to try EZ-dial tub next time.

I'm seeing a bunch more pins start to pop up! The four pins that showed up first have grown quite a bit in size but I don't think they're maturing much. I think I got the tub dialed in pretty good now because it's maintaining droplets. I did notice some fuzzy feet but it doesn't look too bad to me.

I am getting some side pinning. Not much, just a few and they seem to be aborting which I think is good. I cant wait to harvest some fruits so I can start doing some agar work. The plates I poured have been chilling for a couple days and nothing has grown on them.

Now we're talking man! This was a day a two ago and more and more keep coming in! They're way pretty, that's why I chose them. But in hindsight for my first grow it might've been best to choose something a little quicker.

It's really starting to look like a party in this bad boy! Got a huge hike planned this weekend, hoping I might be able to harvest a few by then.

I am noticing some weird fuzz though. Some of the fruit have fuzzy feet so I removed a tiny bit of tape to increase FAE, but I notice lots of fuzz on top of the myc as well. Does that seem like something to be concerned about or does that seem normal?

You made the right call pulling a piece of tape off. Fuzzy feet are no issue, but when it starts climbing near the cap, or on the cap, its indicative of not enough air flow.

Update, more and more pins are coming in and they are getting bigger. To me it seems they aren't really maturing fully into mushrooms. they're becoming big ass pins. In the third pic you can see a fella no bigger than an 1.5" with a tiny cap. Looks to me its broken it's veil already. There are a handful this way right now.

I'm reading that Jack frost can do weird shit sometimes and that often the second flush is better than the first. And, I for sure didnt have these in constant ideal environment. For now I plan to just keep waiting to see how big these get. Hoping some fully develop. They are still growing so I don't want to harvest yet.

Well fuck it. I decided to pull everything out. It's been a few days since I saw any significant growth. I'm really hoping the second flush comes in with fuller fruits. I gave it a really heavy misting after pulling everything out, any ideas how long a second flush usually takes to start popping in?

I couldn't help but try a fresh one while harvesting. I ate a little guy that weighed 4g wet. Felt pretty fuzzy all night. Nothing crazy, just a heavy buzz really.
