This is the jar from the OP that was knotting.  Second flush

Lot of projects going.

Liking the 2 cup containers.

Chloro colonizing.

A cyan cross in my other tote.

And some bispo with the lid flipped so they can colonize the casing.

I spun up ten half pints of BVI with 8:1:1 of coir:castings:vermiculite and then 1 part of rye grass seed:4 parts sub, per the main post. Can't remember if I added CaCO3 — is this recommended?

I had a bunch of rye grass seed stored in the freezer which I used to use for Violet's in-vitro style grows. (She was controversial but I always loved her posts and innovative approach.) Grass seed went in dry with the bulk at "medium-heavy" field capacity to allow enough moisture for the seed to cook and hydrate.

I inoculated from wedges and and did an early shake after a couple of days and it was easy at that stage to move stuff around. They seem to be colonising evenly? Another shake or just let ride now? Probably a bit harder to shake now I guess.

It felt a bit weird inoculating from a wedge — maybe I'll get some LC going and pour in the future like with MudaFuka bottles for cubes.

I also have a bunch of 500ml PP5's lying around but they are more vertical than they are wide so not sure how they would be for pans.

Just let them grow out a bit more?  Shake? These are modded lids with SFDs.

I let them finish generally, unless the colonization is very uneven after the shake.

It helps them consolidate better if they're shaken less.

Same substrate but twice the amount of sub.

I'm running these unmodified I will just loosen a little bit if I need too.

Oh.. reminds me.  Lid loose and wrapped in foil.  Four can fit on top of seven half pint jars, which uses the same amount of prep in the OP (four cups sub, two cups grain measured dry but hydrated as appropriate).

Where did you get those little plastic jars? I’m always worried about plastic melting in the wife’s PC. 🤣

Are they generic polypropylene deli/freezer containers?

Yeah, generic two cup pp5 freezer containers.  I got them on Amazon, but the ones I picked up are no longer in stock.

There's others though.

As far as the cycle, I'm very careful that they don't touch the sides of the vessel.  And I run them with the lid loose.

So I cracked my colonised BVI half-pints and cased them. Here's how some of them looked under the lid prior to casing. Did I leave them too long perhaps?

And now less than 24 hours after casing and in unmodded tub with saturated perlite/water layer in the base per Tree Frog's simple chamber instructions. They did have lids on loose, unthreaded for 12 hours overnight in a small tub prior to setting up the perlite chamber this morning.

The lid is resting on the handles which form a large gap — maybe post-casing  and pre-pinning I don't need the extra spacing for now?

No temperature control at this stage as it's late summer in sub-tropical NSW so ambient conditions seem ok as is. I work from home so can mist as needs be.

Racks are resting on the perlite — will add support if they seem to sink too much.

I'm thinking that post-casing pre-pinning I don't need the lid gapped yet?

Those are looking good.  If the casing isn't drying out I would leave the lid gapped.

If it is drying out then yeah, you probably don't need to gap the lid yet.

Thank you so for the write up! This is very helpful:cool::mushroom2: just got my first pan spores (india) on agar last night and am begining my research. I am the owner of 2 fur potatoes(guinea pigs) they poop a lot 99 times a day per pig, on average. I'm starting to think about maybe aging the pellets, hydrating, then using this as the nitrogen as well a portion of the substrate for some aio cakes. Is this a little bonkers, of do you think this has some potential to grow pans?

I am open to and appreciate any suggestions having never worked with manure or pans.

The pigs say hello!

I've been using rabbit manure successfully so my gut says yes. Try it out.
