I learn something new everyday!

The thing with beach cliff is that they use different types of sardines. I like the big meaty sardines,  compared to the little fragile ones that fall apart easily. You get those big ones with the Beach cliff with greens chili's,  but not with the other varieties of beach cliff. The other varieties are those little mushy ones. I mean they are decent, but are of lower quality,  in my opinion.

I'm going to go all out and try some actual gourmet ones next time I go to the market. I'll report back soon

Look at the type of fish when you buy sardines etc.

Beach cliff with soybean oil and green pepper is Herring as the fish ( a larger herring breed), whereas the other Beach cliff varieties have Sprats, which are Brisling sardines (Sprattus sprattus is the scientific name i think). Sprats are also in the herring family but they are small breed of herring. Normal herring and Mackerel are usually larger, whereas sardines are usually on the smaller side. Hope this helps :super:

EDIT: To be honest its confusing. The ones with the green pepper, the fish is listed as herring, wheras the others are listed as sprats. The sprats are the small ones basically.

EDIT:
I looked at the Walmart website and some i would personally try if i could get them for a reasonable price:
  • Beach Cliff - Louisiana Hot sauce and the Soy oil with hot green chillies
    Polar - Kippers
Coles - Smoked Rainbow trout in Olive oil
Bumble Bee - Hard wood smoked oysters
California Girl - Sardines in tomato sauce
Sea Tales - Jack Mackerel in Sun flower oil
    Polar - peppered herring fillets
    Freshe - Sicillian caponata
King oscar - sardines in EVOO and jalapeno
    iCan - Icelandic Cod Liver
Beach Cliff - Fish Steaks in mustard sauce
    King Oscar - Mediterranean Mackerel

Ah,  I was curious as to why the ingredients were listed as herring and now I know! Thanks for that clarification my man

Man, those beach cliffs are the cheapest sardines that I can find. They are only one dollar and twenty something cents.

I have tried all the flavors of beach cliff,  but I don't really dig the  mustard. All all the others are great!

Out of what you listed,  I have tried and I buy the Polar kippers and  the Polar peppered herring fillets,  really great they are!

I have yet to try any of the others as our Walmart doesn't carry most of them.

I found a new brand today and they are delicious  :yesnod:  The sardines are decent sized and are very delicious and meaty.

These are only slightly more expensive than the Beach Cliffs and far from gourmet,  but the choices are very limited at Walmart. I'll try somewhere else next time.

Got a shipment of tinned fish!

And wrote a review.

Brand: Nice Cans, Canadian owned but produced in Portugal
Type: Sardines in tomato and peppers
Species: Sardina pilchardus
Location: Purchased from an online store called Something Fishy
Review:. The fish has a slight firmness, it is not mushy, but is soft to chew. The fish flavour is beautiful, tastes of high quality, fresh sardines. The oil is not watery, but is not too thick, a very nice consistency. The tomato flavour is not strong, mostly the oil comes through. The peppers are slightly sweet and tangy, there is some roasted pepper chunks in the can. The oil/tomato mixture also has a slight umami taste which is very pleasant. Highly reccomended.
Ingredients: Sardine (Fish)( 75%), Organic olive oil (19.8%), Pepperonta (Smoked roasted peppers, onions, garlic, oregano, vinegar (sulphites), tomato (4.2%) and sea salt
Rating: 9.25 out of 10
Price: It cost $14.95
Comments: Its 120 grams net weight

So do i. I got another shipment of 6 cans, three of which are cephalopod, 1 more octopus and 2 squid. Salt and pepper calamari is probably my favourite dish of all time.

Yes they are razor clams, Lucas (i think thats his name) from Tinned Fish Reviews on Facebook gave these Cuca razor clams a 10 out of 10. And hes tried Razor clams on multiple occasions, ive never had them before.

Its super expensive, my supervisor went away and i covered his shifts and got extra money so i spent it on tinned fish. Spain and Portugal have the best tradition of tinned fish. Yeah i ordered these imported cans, cause Australia sucks for tinned fish.

The sardines were really good, my original score was 9.25 ... i might change it back to that. They are 10 Canadian dollars from the nice cans site. You might be able to get them for a good price in the States.

EDIT: His name is Marcus not Lucas.

Brand: CUCA, Spanish company
Type: Navajas, Razor Clam in Brine
Species: N/A perhaps Mesodesma donacium
Location: Purchased from an online store called Something Fishy
Review: Fresh tasting with a mild oceanic flavour from lightly salted brine. They are quite meaty, slightly rubbery, with a texture similar to marinated calamari. The texture and chew is quite pleasant. I have never tried them before and am not really sure what to say. They are very nice but quite plain, so if you are looking for complex flavours, do not get this can. I will say this though, for plain seafood they are really good. It was quite enjoyable and a new experience. Im curious if these always come in brine, or if they come in sauce as well.
Ingredients: Razor shell/clam (mollusc), water, salt and antioxidants sodium citrate, citric acid and EDTA Calcium Disodium
Rating:  8.75 out of 10
Price: It cost $14.50
Comments: Its 120 grams net weight, product of Chile

Gosh dang dude,  you seem to like canned fish better than me,  haha!

Yeah,  unless I order some razor clams,  or octopus,  I'll not find them here.

We do have squid though and it is awesome! I like it with salt and pepper,  just like I do my octopus  :yesnod:

I love how you are expressing your opinion and rating the fish my man  Now,  I'll know what's good and what's not,  if I can ever get a hold of any of it,  that is

I'm going to go out later and try some different markets. I hoping to find something awesome! I need bread too,  as I'm dying for a sardine sandwich right now  :yesnod:

They finally got back my beach cliff with green chilies  :excited:

They have been out of them at both Walmart's for over  a month now and I was starting to get worried!

This squid is really good too  :yesnod: You ever try it before?

Brand: La Curiosa, Spanish company, Galicia Region
Type: Pulpo, Marinated Galician Octopus in Olive oil and Paprika
Species: Octopus vulgaris (Common octopus)
Location: Purchased from an online store called The Canned Company
Review: The octopus is fresh and tender, fairly delicate and softer than i expected but has a good amount of chew to it. The texture is perfect really.  The paprika gives it a lightly smoked flavour and also warmth from a touch of spiciness. The oil is high quality, though a bit more watery than i would like but very delicious on bread. It is a high quality tin, but fairly plain, there are no stand out flavours, which is fine but I would not recommend this dish to someone who wants octopus with punchy flavours. Nothing is overpowering about it, it is just a tin of mild, high quality octopus with very subtle but excellent flavour.
Ingredients: Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), Olive oil, Spices and Salt
Rating: 9 out of 10
Price: It cost $31.95, i got an Easter 15% discount so it was $27.15 AUD
Comments: Its 110 grams net weight, product of Spain

Brand: La Curiosa, Spanish company, Galicia Region
Type: Mejillones, Mussels in escabeche 8-12
Species: Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mediterranean mussels)
Location: Purchased from an online store called The Canned Company
Review:  The mussels retain their structure but are very delicate and soft with a creamy feel to them. The mussel flavour is not strong with a very lightly smokey flavour from the paprika. The escabeche sauce has an acidic-zesty flavour which is quite prominent from the wine vinegar. The sauce is quite thin and has a good balance between liquid and oil. The escabeche sauce is quite delicious and carries some of the mussel flavour as well as a hint of sweetness and spiciness.
Ingredients: Mussels (Mollusc), Olive oil, Wine vinegar, Salt and Spices.
Rating: 9.25 out of 10
Price: It cost $26.95, i got an Easter 15% discount so it was $22.90 AUD
Comments: Its 110 grams net weight, product of Spain

Important Announcement

I was expecting more from La Curiosa, they are high quality but didnt knock my socks off. They are premium priced and i was expecting a 9.75 from the octopus and 9.5 from the mussels. Its really hard to give a score to high priced tinned octopus/mussels/razor clams as i really have nothing to compare it with. I wouldnt suggest any of the last 4 except the Nice cans sardines with tomato and peppers and if you really want to try something new the razor clams if you never tried them before. Not only are they expensive but you have to pay shipping as well. I would only suggest La Curiosa if you are doing well financially and wanted to experience as much tinned fish as possible. Its not a cheap hobby and in this financial crisis, you are not missing out on much if you dont get them. Each can is a nice little experience and thats it. I write these reviews to help you if you ever want to venture out into the tinned fish universe. I think any can 15$ AUD or more you would want a 9.25+. I got six more cans so im hoping for one 10 and hopefully a 9.75 as well. Its also to encourage people to eat more tinned fish, the best way to get it is from a brick and mortar store as they cover shipping, which is the real buster on your wallet.

ALso i was obsessing over high quality tinned fish as ive never tried it. I decided to splurge and get 10 tins, im glad i did as it should scratch my itch and get expensive tinned fish out of my system. I dont think i will be ordering expensive tinned fish for a quite a while after this. I am a cleaner and work hard, and am not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. I can say this, these purchases werent worth it, i should have saved my money. But at least im getting it out of my system.

God bless you, all the best in this financial crisis.

PS. I will still be writing reviews after my next shipment, just less often and i think i will try to find tins at italian supermarkets, world food supermarkets, fine food stores etc. So i can buy them straight from the store in my city, just got to get more creative with it. There are a few more supermarket tins id like to try too.

Second shipment is in.

And did a review.

Brand: Carmelo, an English company, product of Portugal
Type: Sardines in Spicy Tomato Sauce
Species: Sardina pilchardus
Location: Purchased from an online store called The Tinned Fish Market
Review:  The sardines are on the larger side, they are quite firm with a bit of softness, the smaller pieces being softer. The sardine flavour is at a good level, not too fishy but you can taste it and its pleasant. The tomato sauce is savoury and has a good consistency, it is not very oily, and is a thickish sauce. The tomato flavour is nice, they taste like good quality tomatoes and they have a touch of sweetness to it. The spicyness is barely detectable, its just a slight warmth but it is there. I had a chilli pod and it exploded with juice and as i bit into it, not much heat to the chilli at all, it was delectable. Overall a very good tin, i would recommend buying this one as the pricing is reasonable.
Ingredients: Sardines (Sardina pilchardus) (Fish) (65%), Tomato (12%), Olive oil, Chilli pepper (2%) and Salt
Rating: 9 out of 10
Price: It cost $10 AUD
Comments: Its 125 grams net weight, product of Portugal , Carmelo is owned by the Tinned Fish Market founder, Patrick Martinez

Brand: Cantara Brand
Type: Mackerel fillets in mustard sauce
Species: Scomber japonicus or Scomber colias
Location: Purchased from an online store called The Tinned Fish Market
Review:  The mackerel fillets are quite firm with a just enough softness to make them enjoyable. I received four good size chunks of mackerel, they are quite meaty, so you get a good amount of fish. The bones are removed from the fillets.  The mackerel has a decent flavour, not overpowering but it comes through and is complemented nicely by the sauce. The mustard sauce is oily and not very mustardy, there is a light flavour of mustard and a bit of sweetness to the sauce. They are well seasoned with salt so they do not taste too plain. I was hoping to get a thicker sauce with mustard seeds in it.
Ingredients: Mackerel (75%), Mustard seasoning (16.7%) (water, alcohol vinegar, sugar, salt, modified starch, mustard flour, stabilizers (locust bean and guar gum) and spices), Sunflower vegetable oil, Vinegar (sulfites)
Rating: 8.5 out of 10
Price: It cost $11.95 AUD
Comments: Its 120 grams net weight, product of Portugal

Brand: Los Peperetes
Type: Pulpo al Ajillo, Octopus with Garlic and Chilli
Species: Octopus vulgaris
Location: Purchased from an online store called The Tinned Fish Market
Review:  The texture is beautiful, it is soft, moist and very tender, with a slight amount of chew to it. The octopus flavour is not too strong and not too weak, it comes through nicely and is highly enjoyable. The octopus flavour is not strong, but not plain, it is beautifully seasoned with salt and feels buttery. The chilli and garlic flavours are very subtle. The olive oil is superb, rich and decadent and compliments the tender octopus perfectly. The olive oil is a perfect consistency, thicker than other tinned fish oils, but quite thinner than the EVOO you get in a bottle. It is a perfect tin, but very expensive.
Ingredients: Octopus (tentacles) (Mollusc-cephalopod), olive oil, garlic, chilli pepper, salt
Rating: 10 out of 10
Price: It cost $39.95 AUD
Comments: Its 120 grams net weight, product of Spain

From the picture it doesnt look like there is much octopus but there was lots of smaller tentacle slices underneath the bigger chunks and a few larger tentacle slices underneath too. Basically the standard amount you expect from a can.

Also i knocked the tin as i was opening it, so it didnt look as carefully arranged unfortunately.
