Squid... any simple ideas?
    #4858073 - 10/27/05 02:19 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I recently purchased about a pound of frozen squid from the supermarket, but don't know what to do with it. A friend suggested cleaning them and pan frying them in butter...I don't know. They are about 6 inches long, if that makes any difference. ANY suggestions would be appreciated.

you could make some sort of batter (don't know if I'm using the right word here; something like the stuff you make pancakes with) and cut pieces of squid and dip those in it and then deepfry them. serve these crunchy treats with lemon and maybe grind some fresh black pepper to sprinkle on top after deepfrying

(I just made this up, but I can imagine it would taste nice  )

That's being served quit a lot actually

But remember! Don't bake or fry squid too long! They'll taste like old shoes when you fry them too long!

this is going to be the hardest part about cooking it...

determining when it's done.

this is why i don't like cooking with squid and shrimp.

assuming theyre tentacles are still connected , disengage afformentioned tentacles from body slice in to 1 to 2 inch rings dust and roll them in them with seasoned flour and plunge into very hot oil for like two minutes or until golden brow remove with slotted spoon drain  sqirt some fresh lemon juice and enjoy!!!!!  marinara sauce on the side is optional  Meh im a purist!!!  Naked is best :smirk:

I brought the squid to a friends house who had a deep fryer. We cleaned the squid (it was a lot easier than I thought it'd be), coated them in egg, breaded them in flower and fried them for about 3 minutes at 340F.

I made a dip out of butter, lemon juice, garlic powder, and a pinch of black pepper. This went very well with the fried squid, which was good in its own right. We also fried up some potatoes (with thyme, basil, and oregano) since we had the fryer out anyway, and they were awesome too, especially since it was the first time any of us made fries before.

Thanks for tips everyone, they were helpful.

i used to buy a little baskets of fried calimari rings when i was younger all the time. that has got to be the best way to eat them...deep fried. the ones i used to get had a thick slightly crunchy coating most likely from a batter like stefan said..

stuff em then grill them really fast (some kind of vegetable stuffing so you don't have to cook it long, although you can use some kind of forcemeat albeit with some cooking skills) Remember to cook squid either really fast or really long (or until tender). If your boiling it or stewing it, add a wine cork, it facilitates the tenderizing process.
