Appreciate the reply. I started moving them into the tub part of the bathroom during the day and they get nice filtered light through bathroom privacy windows. I get caught between not being a helicopter parent but also not wanting to not monitor at all, and that causes me to tweak little things here and there to make sure the conditions stay nice.

I like that reference about it being good if I’m good haha, again thanks! Always appreciate the insight and guidance.

This is a super old reply, but I would like to add in also that I have also had coir issues based on brand or cleanliness. Not even in the shroom growing hobby but while growing weed. Found plenty of brands that has gnat and live bug issues even though it was dry compressed coir. Also had some brands that had mold issues even though I hydrated it to field capacity and let it evaporate naturally before using it, had an entire grow plagued by soil mold growth. Cannabis still came out fine but maybe a little stressed. Ever since using only certain brands though, haven't had much issue.

Is the idea that 'Harvesting should be done before the veils break, for maximum potency/because the dropped spores will inhibit future flushes' something that needs to be considered outdated info?

From what I've read on threads here, it only really matters for aesthetic and spore print purposes, but seems a lot of new hobbyists (myself included) get a bit concerned about it.

Also, this thread was a good read, many thanks!

Yeah, I don't think there's any merit to the idea that spores inhibit future flushes, though a really heavy drop could make the substrate a pain in the ass to work with. And Harvesting/processing fruits which have dropped spores WILL stain your fingers dark purple.

But also, I take issue with the whole idea of "harvest at xyz point." Especially on a first grow. It's not weed. Fruits at any stage of development will make you trip. Some genetics will continue to pump out crazy stem growth long after opening up and dropping spores, so in my view, there's not even a consistent point of maximum weight gain. And anyway, there's debate over the concentration of actives at different stages. Once you've managed to get to a reasonably clean fruiting situation, you'll end up with way more than you need to trip your brains out. If you're going for bulk :yields:, then you kinda gotta figure out your optimal harvesting strategy yourself. Ideally, fruits should be picked before they start to rot. Everything else is up to you. Well, technically, even THAT is up to you, nobody's gonna stop you from eating half-rotten fruit or picking out the bad bits or making tea with it. Maybe you have a stomach of steel and don't give a shit.

I personally pick whenever and however I feel like it, often based on when I have time to harvest and process fruit. With multiple tubs going at once, all in slightly different stages, that could mean picking everything from blown-out stem monsters to reasonably accessible pins in one session. It's all getting ground up and mixed together anyway, so I could give a fuck about bag appeal. The next person might want picture-perfect toadstools, or have a particular preference as to wha they like to eat.

Ohhh boy... I totally agree with you. As a bulk producer myself though Im essentially obligated to make the bag appeal as pretty as possible in order to consistently move tens of lbs of fungi. Open caps and Spored out fruits are buyers favorite things to bitch about. Ive had this argument with so many people...A lot of people try to say "once the cap is bigger than a thumbnail it quits producing psilocybin" lmao 😂 And im talking people that will purchase 20 to 100+ lbs actually believe this BS and spread it around. Its been repeated over and over on the west coast... But yeah at the very least spores make the end product ugly and mostly closed caps and uniform fruits add to bag appeal. If youre not moving weight then this obviously matters a whole lot less. Its been a subject of lot sof frustration though. Basically I err on the side of harvesting early on spore dropping strains... I highly favor albino genetics that look cool with open caps (avery , TAT) or non sporey and non noticible open cap strains like PE varieties (Melmac ❤️❤️❤️❤️). Ive still had customers bitch about averies or tats with open wavy caps that look beautiful repeating the same open cap fucking bullshit...

Cell division is almost no existent once spores mature , it's all cell enlargement , it's why the caps go a lighter color, think of it like blowing up a balloon. So you're not actually gaining dry weight just water , I see no harm in letting it go but I also don't see the benefits either, personal choice.

Facts!! Fuckin wook science, I swear!

I usually set aside the inevitable "uglies" to sell at discounted prices or to make into chocolates and gummies. Moving forward id like to spend a lot more time on making value added products. I have a gummy brand as well as a guy with a chocolate brand I collab with. Unfortunately I havent gained much traction selling them as opposed to dried fruits. Honestly it seems like the best route these days is to just make an IG account / other online methods of advertising and have a secure / crypto based payment platform for sales of products. Ive met people that do it at a large scale and have zero issues... Still sketches me out lol but times they are-a-changin'

Not that I'm particularly attached to the idea, but I will push back on this just a little. I still use just a tiny drop of dish soap in my spray bottle, just to disrupt surface tension and prevent bigger droplets from forming too easily. Also just to make the mist stick to the walls just a little better. I can definitely see how a lot of soap would make things hard to look at, but I thoroughly clean the upper part of my SAB MAYbe once every 6 months, and never because of visibility issues.

To me, this is more in the realm of something that gets into the whole rabbithole of "do we need iso? Do wee need gloves? Do we need to mist at all?", etc. And I honestly only know about what I do. I wouldn't make any sort of formal recommendation beyond "you should use a SAB and spend some time dialing in your sterile technique."

Well, OK, that's another way to restate what I just said.

That's precisely my point about it- I'm not ready to toss it into the same category as gypsum or colonizing in the dark. And also that there's some nuance to how much soap you use, and if we're discussing outdated theories and whatnot, why exactly you want to use it in the first place.

Is using soap to break surface tension physics or chemistry?

I wonder what Neils Bohr would say.

My guess is, something along the lines of "leave me alone, I'm busy."

Auto-Summary
The post discusses the use of soap water in the SAB (Substrate Agar Bottle) for contamination reduction, despite the outdated belief that it's unnecessary. The author shares their personal workflow and reasons for using soap water, emphasizing the trade-off of lower viability for lower contamination rates. The post also acknowledges obsolete information and highlights the importance of helping others, especially those with limited resources, to access household grown medicines. The thread contains a mix of useful information and noise, with various topics such as agar work, contamination control methods, cultivation equipment, myths, sterilization techniques, strain-specific traits, substrate amendments, and potency. The author hopes to help clarify gaps and update the original poster with valuable insights.

B Traven said:

I agree with you 100%, I still soap water my SAB. It has to do with the timing of my workflow. I don't wait around for gravity after making a mess of air in the SAB, soap water seems to help lower my contamination rates. The lower viability is a trade off for me.

However the point of this thread is to acknowledge obsolete information, that given proper SOP soap water is NOT needed. I work well outside of proper SOP, so it can help me.

An analogy: Sterilizing coir is harmless

I would disagree, in some cases its necessary to sterilize. One could pickup a bulk supply of coir at Trader Joes, in an unmarked torn package from a hobo with piss and shit stains on his shirt spitting profanities just trying to make another couple bucks for his next high. I wouldn't risk my culture on that random supply, and take the few hours to sterilize it if it saved me a few bucks on his likely stolen stash of coir. Not everyone is loaded.

Same goes with troubleshooting "wtf, where did that trich come from". Part of the troubleshooting process is eliminating possible contam vectors, and its a very easy (quick) thing to proof-out a bad coir supply by sterilizing it and running a few samples.

--------------------

I've just completed reading of Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms by Paul Stamets and it's reminded me of the importance of helping others (few knee slapping out-dated boomer assumptions in there too lol), in whatever ways possible, that lowering the barrier to entry on access to household grown medicines should be a primary goal. Help as many people as possible sift through noise will help achieve that goal.

This thread has gone through every emotion of noise possible. It's absolutely packed with some gold nuggets but equally polluted with noise. I've read every single post and indexed up to #29356646.

I hope this is helpful in getting the OP updated and fill some gaps on things missing or previously stated that could use some clarification.
