Prepping ~1 quart of coir/verm * 16

So i think this’ll be useful to some ppl because sometimes I only need about of quart of CV for a top layer or or just need some CV material to make a small sub for printing or clone material (literally what I’m doing right now) you can make about a quart of CV with a really easy recipe:

40g of coir
1 cup of water
1/2 cup of verm

** I should add that I use coco bliss brand coir and it’s perfect for this recipe/my preference.. you may have to adjust the water amount a little depending on how wet you want it.  If anything it’s a bit on the drier side so a few heavy mists can get the job done, I’m told. 

It’s a 1/16 of the standard 650g coir, 1 gallon water, 2 quarts verm recipe.



I still use boiling water (especially with these small amounts because it cools off in like 20 minutes) but you can easily just use the hottest water that your tap puts out

I use a plate to press down firmly onto the CV after the water is added and mixed in for a good 30 sec.. this helps evenly distribute the water and keeps clumping down right from the get go (for the full 650g recipe, I use a cutting block that fits perfectly into the rectangle cooler that I use to hydrate)



Super easy



If you need more than a quart, it’s really easy to adjust because of the round numbers.. 1.5qts:

60g coir
1.5 cups water
3/4 cup verm

Etc.  :thumbup:

Forgive my noobieness but why would you use coir/verm for printing or clone material. Im still a newb and want to learn!!

If you want to just use coir, the fresh prints gave me a recipe recently for 200g coir to 4 cups of water that worked well for about 4 qts of made sub.  So I’d give 50g coir to 1 cup water a try to get ~1 qt of made sub

Thanks for the info, something that I hadn’t heard before was using a rectangular cooler for the larger batches of CV prep, ideal for keeping the pasteurisation temps up

Just wondering and to follow up on question as to why to use CV for a print grow - is the theory that using just coir and vermiculite also that there's less chance of nasty bacteria/critters in these initially dry ingredients than perhaps adding other ingredients that might mess things up - like coffee granules, horse-shit etc.

I was just referring to doing a small grow to get a couple fruits to print.  You still need a high nute source like grains or brf etc. 

I make small 4oz grain jars for other purposes like cloning (I can fruit those grains out in sandwich baggies after I’m done using them for my cloning uses) so it made more sense to me than it probably did you to make small substrates for printing

I hope this is not a dumb question and I may be overthinking it, but you say that you just use boiling water for the small sub and let it cool.

Is this enough to pasteurize the substrate (sterilization requires higher temps I assume) which can then be used to mix with a small amount of colonised grain (or LC/Agar etc) and be relatively safe from contamination?

Or do you separately pasteurize/sterilize once you have mixed this in with another nutrient providing substrate ingredient (grain etc) before moving on to the mixing with colonised grain?

Most ppl don’t even boil their water to hydrate coir anymore.  I haven’t had any issues with contamination with this process and the small amounts.  I wouldn’t worry about it

Reviving this.  I'm assuming if I wanted to add manure for pan substrate I'd split the coir addition in half?  So much to learn still...
