I'm sure this has been done... but... Im doing it now, cuz I thought it was a faze... but no.  I think it's been permanently gentrified and absolutely commercialized.

The issue isn't just a matter of taste, or frustration in manipulated results on searches and content sites... It's entire functionality as a information medium is essentially lost.

This place and others like it are an incredibly rare gem at this point.  Am I wrong?

The great shittification continues!

Fortunately AI is starting to feed off AI and answer AI and produce AI to promote to AI to consume AI. All this means it'll fuck up way sooner than expected and everyone can go outside again.

Are you talking about youtube,Instagram, reddit comments? Or just the internet in general?

If you mean in general I don't agree. You talk about gentrification, I watch a bunch of Mexican, Asian and Arab content creators at least as many as are white. The internet has been commercialized since day 1. There's always been advertisements. Thats how things are funded.


I do think the internet right this moment are filled with people acting like politics is a religion. They care more about politics and being right that they don't give a damn about the people it affects or even if it helps them personally. In short people are acting like selfish idiots. And God forbid you disagree with them or you are the enemy.

I agree the internet is what you make of it and there's alot more to offer than there was. It's easier and harder to find information. But if you're well acquainted is not terrible to parce.

The internet in its heyday was primarily used by men and was used in a different way than today. Today we see a lot of open conversations that promote inclusivity whereas things used to be more private and exclusive. The whole idea of it was for government researchers to communicate with others in case of a nuclear war sharing exclusive information and only the occasional cat video. Now, the inverse is prevalent. It’s mostly cat videos relative to the research that is shared. Everything in between seems to now be self-serving and continues to head that way whereas before, people shared content for the benefit of others. Shroomery seems to be the place where the soul of the internet is taking refuge and why so many are drawn here. It was created in a time where the internet was fascinating to the majority of people and this, again, is in part due to its male dominated ethos and exclusivity imho.

I don't think it has anything to do with gender of users.  It has to do with manipulation for commercial interest. 

The flood of mass users, via mainstream social media has not been some great inclusive opening, It's been an algorithmic panning of it's culturally bizarre and hyper expressive nature.  I'm not talking about dork information(Though that's cool).. I'm talking about the free flow of cultural information, expression, humor and ideas.  With the mass adoption of social media came a tsunami of the hyper-offended hoards and wealth speculators, more than happy to serve them.  We saw every SM brand gentrify.  They put all kinds of ideologies and special interest reasons for it... but, the reason was money. And it snuffed out truly progressive and liberal expression.       

The media really hooked onto the incels and race trolls... who were primarily men, and insular...  So, I get where you are getting your perspective but you are wrong.  The reality of the internet cresting 2010, was an uncensored, unfettered, but, agreed, challengingly offensive place to be.  We were never more free to express who we were and share opinion.  Now.. Every major site uses arbitrary algorithms to pan or hide the bulk of posts.  You trust THAT, as a benevolent effort of inclusion and open discussion? 

As for the Shroomery...  has certainly not sold out it's culture.  It's a special interest site though...  Yes, I personally consider it a refuge.  The myriad of sites like this, were the baby thown out with the bath water... and no one site like this one can be a grand refuge.  Reddit was the only real hope of that and I think it's pretty much lost it's way.

I’m just trying to explain why it had been so great in the past and relate it to this site. I feel there are many parallels as I’ve explained. I believe you may be overthinking it but I’m glad to see my perspective is not lost on you. The conversations are more open and inclusive but the surveillance and commercialization of that content is more exclusive and again the inverse was true of the past and more appealing. Less surveillance and more privatized conversations with male domination in those spaces, albeit arbitrary, were factors that contributed to its fascination. That and not everyone had a computer in their pocket. It was more ritualistic instead of a casual experience.

I played the shit out of that game at school. Cross country Canada too. It was a trucking game. You could pick up hitchhikers and get robbed. Surprised it was considered appropriate.

Not for long but on 8-8-2019 God quoted me that in the cluster of catastrophies half a billion people will die but.. He's sticking to that figure.

I was reading a report earlier in the year that estimated about 20% of our internet text is either wholly or partially AI generated and that by the end of the year it is expected to be about 90%.

I don't know how much people here use search engines to get answers to questions on the internet, or rather just approach it as a social and entertainment resource, but as an information resource search engines are becoming markedly more useless. The bots are winning the war. They scrape and reproduce and SEO everything in mass numbers pushing actual human content further down the list every day. Big search loves it cause advertising $$$'s, human experience is barely a factor in the equation.

Now I find myself having to use AI engines to make factual searches because I can't get a straight answer from a search engine, and sometimes not even being able to get one from AI because even it can't find it among all the AI trash.

This process was happening slowly with SEO trash pages before but since the release of free LLM chat it's accelerating at a phenomenal pace.

Yeah…that is particularly annoying.  I generally just scroll past the walls of text and ignore those posts.

Great post Northerner.  If the internet can be said to suck more nowadays it’s precisely because of what you mentioned.  Soon we’ll just be reading an almagamated conglomeration of the copied and reproduced.
