Plastic should probably be banned entirely. Even the production process is actually incredibly toxic, and the chemicals used in plastic are toxic, and apparently it's breaking down and literally ending up in our brains. Sounds a lot like lead cups in the Roman Empire to me.

You’re right, but I think it’s maybe too late.  I suppose we can mitigate some of the compounding factors involved.  Although once the parts of the human genome related to reproduction and or immune system have been altered so as to pass onto further generations enough, thanks to all the shit seeping into the environment building into & changing us; then, unless sufficiently counteracted in time, it’s only a matter of time until we’re more or less done. 

Which has already been occurring on a global scale for forever now. 
If not something else first, then the derivatives of broken down / deformed
and changed plastics, metals, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides,
and other chemicals almost certainly destroy us.

It all comes down to production costs.  Plastic is cheaper. If you went to the store right now to buy cola you could get a 2 liter for like 2-3 bucks. 2 liters worth of cola from glass bottles aren't even sold so you'd probably have to get at least a 6 pack for like 5-7$

We wanted convenience, and in the short to middle term we didn’t give a much of a general fuck, provided the convenience was cheap and affordable. 

All for reducing the utilisation of plastics, but they’re a part of all the cool and useful and convenient shit we use today.  From cars to smart phones, aircraft to medical tools, the plastic preserving your sirloin to the plastic in vibrators—it’s here to stay.  I think , given various situations that we treat plastic as being understandable when it comes to purpose built, long lasting objects.  But ban it wholesale for single use disposable consumer retail units.  Fuck the straws, take away containers, red cups, kids cups, take away bags (I don’t give a fuck if you’re selling them as reusable to unthinking customers for 20 cents a pop).  Fucking happy meal toys should be entirely biodegradable—oh but those happy meals now cost you $12 American.

And it ought to be legislated with a transition period that starts today and lasts six months…and covers every developed nation on earth.  Let’s see how innovative food and packaging people can be, and how willing  we billions are to be inconvenienced for the sake of oceans fish can swim in and for our entire bodies not to become sponges for microplastics.

Keep it in cars, aircraft, phones.  Get it the fuck out of fashion, food, vapes and sparkly wrapping.  Something.  Just try.

Production cost, breakage, weight when shipping.

But I heard if we used glass for all the plastic bottles we use we would use up all the sand, don't know if that's true

Bottles can be reused though, deposits should lead people to not smash them on the sidewalk, but we would have a lot more broken glass in the environment, cause kids will smash them, not to mention accidents

Glass can be remelted too I believe, so it's recyclable I think
