Its weird all these years later there was no motive determined. Most of these mass shooters have a manifesto, or a bunch of online posts, something you could point to as the "why". Even if its something stupid like they were an incel/racist/skitzo, you at least know why they did it.

He was still gambling the day of the event, that seems extremely weird

Just prior to the hijackings, some of the 9-11 terrorists went to the gym, purchased porn, enjoyed some booze, bought new clothes & shoes, went to Kinko’s, & shopped at Winn-Dixie.

In my town we had a young adult go psychotic and kill 2 people and hurt a third. Apparently he had been developing schizophrenia for a time beforehand. Sometimes there really is no reason or explanation.

"schizophrenia" is a very common excuse

When we don't understand (or want to understand) the motivations for violent behaviors, this is the go to word - "schizophrenia"  This type of label makes us feel better, as we breathe a sigh of relief, now that we "understand the problem".  As if the mystery has be solved.  I see this with parents & school teachers every day.  Why is little Jimmy so aggressive and disruptive?  He has ADD of course!  All the adults feel better, as the mystery has been solved.

It's a mental health issue that causes psychosis and delusions, which don't appear in healthy individuals. How is it an excuse exactly? It explains why, in the case of my community, a relatively popular kid with no criminal history or violent history, began to neglect his hygiene, skip meals and fail to be able to go to school. It explains why he told his girlfriend that 'the devil was talking to him'. It explains why, in court appearances after he was being treated, he apologized to the families of the victims.

What other explanation do you have? Why would a kid with no history of violence, no particularly bad background, decide to kill? If your explanation is 'we just don't know' it's really not a great explanation.

Schizophrenia isn't just a guess, it's a cluster of symptoms that this person (in his 20s) had. Not all schizophrenics are violent, true. Most aren't. And not all violent people are schizophrenic, in fact most cases of violence have nothing to do with schizophrenia, so I don't see how you see it as a broad excuse when it barely applies to almost any individual case of violence. It only applies rarely, actually. But someone in the midst of psychosis can lack control of their actions. Schizophrenia is clear neurologically - you can see it on brain scans, it has set symptoms, it has treatments that work.

A person with schizophrenia who takes an anti-psychotic medication frequently no longer experiences hallucinations and delusions. It's a medical problem treated - how is it an 'excuse for something else'? In contrast I think it's a fairy tale to think every instance of violence has a clear motive or goal, as many things people do often do not have a goal at all. Imputing a detailed plan to people with psychosis, when no evidence of planning exists, doesn't help explain anything.

There's no other explanation I can see in the case I'm talking about- no clear trauma, no political implications, no ill intentions. Maybe there's something we don't know, but the experts in mental health who treated him in prison said it was psychosis, and I'm pretty sure they know a bit better than you - they got degrees and years of experience dealing with exactly this kind of case.

schizophrenia in the manic stage is typically described as an excess or overabundance of meaning... in other words it makes you see more patterns and connections in everything and so you are more likely to find a lot of meaning in places where it isn't actually there.

the opposite of this would be depression, where you find it very difficult to see meaning anywhere and struggle to form connections or to see patterns in anything. this would be the most likely mindset of someone to commit suicide for example. where they reach a point where absolutely nothing has any meaning anymore and they are just in a nihilistic place devoid of any substance.

someone with bipolar for example, would shift between these two states of mania and depression. it is thought that bipolar is a condition on the schizophrenia spectrum but depression shows to have comorbidity with basically every mental disease imaginable.

Millions of people behave in millions of so called "abnormal" ways or what appear to be senseless behaviors.  You and I have no idea what the kid who "came from a good family with a normal background" actually experienced.  It cracks me up when people say that.  "Jimmy came from a good home."  How can you know?  Humans are very very fragile, and most kids do not get close to what they need to become emotionally mature adults.  Trauma and damage is the norm.

I believe there are usually sensible reasons for serial rapist murderers.  There doesn't need to be a "goal", as you claim.  Many violent people experience massive amounts of self-hatred, which fuels their violent behavior (and often subsequent suicide - mass shooters and jealous lovers angry at their cheating partner).  All violence comes from a violent mind. Every year many people throw rocks at cars from overpasses, with some deaths arising.  Is that "mental illness"?

Behaviors are real, and have motivations.

Because someone voices criticism does not make them a nut job.  There is a huge amount of controversy among scientists and neurologists about this subject.  You don't know about that, do you?  The DSM is a set of criteria some people vote on periodically.  I'm very very sorry to question the so called "authority"

I spent almost a decade working in counseling, psych wards, group homes. Severe mental illness is easily identified and almost boring in how predictable it is

Sample schizo tests read like a junk drawer for every possible religious experience, though I believe that it's possible to differentiate between what is objective vs. subjective, imaginary vs. palpable.

In order to test clear, it seems like you would have to be completely unimaginative.

Is that a label, or typology, or something that is countable, scientifically? Does it rely on self-reported symptoms?
