Anyone have a guess to what genus this is from???

Found growing in human-mulched forest debris. Mostly hardwoods.

Spore print white. KOH negative. Flaky skin. Smells like rotting hay.

Cystolepiota is my guess, something like C. pulverulenta.

I realize now that C. pulverulenta appears to be a European species, but it looks quite close so probably something very similar.

How convinced are you? If collected in Upper Midwest (OP's assigned general location) it seems a bit out of bounds especially fruiting outdoors.

I've never heard of C. pulverulenta before this thread but, based on iNaturalist's map, it has not been observed here in the USA (just like you stated earlier).

However, Leucocoprinus cretaceus has been observed many times in the USA, including six different observations about 200 miles away from my location. Based on this I think L. cretaceus is the best suggestion thus far.

Thank you guys. Problem solving through tough mushrooms with veterans is my favorite way to learn mycology!

Yeah, C. pulverulenta is apparently strictly European, but it seems there are similar looking species in the US.

What makes me question Alan's suggestion is mushroomexpert.com's description of L. cretaceus saying it mostly
grows in the tropics or subtropics, and that it usually turns up in greenhouses and similar habitats in colder climates.

Also want to make it clear that these kinds of genera are not very prominent in my general area, so I won't claim to have the answer for this one.

Ah! I didn't catch that part. Well, I'm almost through the Fungal Microscopy PDF on Mushroom Observer and will soon be able to look more closely at my mushrooms. This one is at the top of my list.
