Pleurotus maybe??? and todays Chanterelle finds -Updated 7-6

Well I am hoping these are in fact Pleurotus of some kind. I have been looking for them for awhile now, does anyone know the season for Oysters in mIchigan?

And on with the show :cool:

a. Habitat (Michigan, USA, multiple clusters on half rotted fallen tree)
b. Characteristics of the gills (white )
c. Measurements of cap (1in -> 3 to 4 inch on mature caps)
d. Characteristics of the stem (white, solid )
e. Characteristics of the cap (white to light grey )
f. Spore print color (printing now....looks to be cream/white though)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises (not noticable)





And today Chanterelle haul




And some small Red Chantrelle's (updates when they get to a decent size) I wanted to get some more pics of them but my battery died :sad:

the red ones are cinnabar versian of the orange chanterelle... I see the chants on the roadside all over here where I live....... I rarely see the red versian, but just so you know DONT EAT the red ones! eat up them orange ones(after cooking of course)

chanterelles taste nasty uncooked,

Those are Pleurotus all right. They seem to be out as long as it's not freezing and there's enough moisture.

Nice chanterelles. It seems to be a good year for them.

Thanks Toxic :grin: good to hear these bitches will elude me no more. Do you know how long I can keep a culture(water) in the fridge for? Glad you like the Chanterelles they eluded me until 3 day ago but i am finding them like crazy now. I had never eaten them before and i have to say they are right up there with morels.

You should probably check in the Cultivation forums for information on keeping cultures. I just go out and find 'em and identify 'em. I haven't tried cultivation and really don't have the time or current inclination to, not that I think there's anything wrong with cultivation...

yes, if you have a little time and the inclination to do so, they are eceedingly easy to culture. on the other hand, if you can find them often in your area, i can understand not wanting to go through the trouble.

Are those darker chanterelles really a cinnabar version of C. Cibarius? They seem to be the only ones I can find: very small growing in rocky soil/ moss. I wonder why you say these cannot be eaten. They smell very fruity and taste very spicy, but I've only nibbled. I've never heard that any true chanterelles can be poisonous.

The darker ones should be Cantharellus cinnabarinus, which is edible.

Hey Nycomyco, where abouts (terrain, bases of certain trees and the like) do you hunt for Chanterelles? I seem to have the best luck on edges of ravines and gullies (sp?) right at the top and down sharp grades up to half way down. Today all my finds were in very precarious places, almost fell a few times..... hope I helped.... maybe give you some new places to look :thumbup:

good shit, I'm jealous of the chanterelle finds :smile:

those curled white flower things are  indian pipes, I've seen them around here, they're pretty cool plants.  can't make chlorophyll and get nutrients from mycorrhizzal(sp) fungi in the soil where they grow.

orange chanterelles occur in my backyard but not in any great quantity. i find it very interesting how long they manage to stick around. it is a shame that i am at work sans camera cause there are some pics on there of some chanterelles that are well over 2 weeks old that have not been ravaged by bugs/slugs/squirrels. is this typical? is there anyway to promote more prolific fruitings? currently there will be no more than 6 or 7 total specimens to be found at a time. i am wondering if harvesting the fruits would encourage further fruiting...

your not imposing at all, yes it is common for Chanterelles to last for awhile. It seems that bugs don't go after them for some time. I have noticed in the past few weeks consistant flushes on all of my known patches. Usually heavier flushes after 2-3 days of rain, so it would seem if you picked 60-70% (this is how many I pick from each patch) of the fruits and watered when dry it would produce more......Although my patches could be unique and being from different parts of the country could change any of these variables.... well I hope I could help.
