Something badass to listen to

I'm an instrumental nutcase. I love music, sometimes the vocals compliment the music, sometimes they're frigging annoying. Dream Theater is a good example of this. I've been listening to The Glass Prison for like an hour straight just head banging to the solo...then the vocals come in.
Most of the music I listen to is classic hard rock (led zeppelin, clapton, hendrix, deep purple, etc...) because they just had so much cosmic soul in their work. You could feel it an be absorbed by it. I also dig some metal. At the Gates, Hypocrisy, Municipal Waste, etc... RULES! However its all about the instruments.
So I ask you to recommend me some badass instrumentals, classic rock, metal, thrash, punk, whatever. As long as its intense (they dont have to be fast...but speed is always a plus ) and uses actual played instruments I'll check it out...oh and please no techo, I have never heard a techno song that sounded good.

Get the Opeth song - The Drapery Falls. Or any of their stuff for that matter. Intense. Or try Porcupine Tree - Strip the Soul. Great.

Attention Deficit recorded @ the Greatest Place On Earth Another instrumental "super" group (rock, metal and new age/jazz) - but this one is different. ATTENTION DEFICIT is Michael MANRING (from Michael Hedges) on bass, Tim ALEXANDER (ex-PRIMUS) on drums, and Alex SKOLNICK (from Testament) on guitar. Each has brought with him the experience of working from different musical backgrounds. The group has really found a good mix, with Michael?s busy session bassist specially for new age, the thunderous drums of Tim injecting a jazzy purism into the mix, and the tandem with the fusion/heavy metal guitar of Alex. They all jell together famously.

Isn't Tim Alexander touring with Primus again?
He did an 8 minute drum solo when I saw Primus last October. He did it with a Line6 delay pedal on...
Jinx, glad to see Shroomery is still on your bookmark list

I'm unable to find any Liquid Tension Expirement, Spastic Ink mp3's.
As far as Opeth...I think they suck...really really bad (no offense). They bore me beyond belief but I'll DL that song you mentioned.

As far as prog metal goes, Dream Theater are pretty tame (and IMO pretty aweful). I think you'd really like Arcturus. Their music is layered with many different instruments, all expertly played, the singing voice is so amazing and fluctuating that it really sounds like another instrument, and it's so amazingly progressive that you never know what to expect! I recommend their last two albums--La Masquerade Infernale and The Sham Mirrors.
You might also like The Painter's Palette, by Ephel Duath. Basically they work from a metal framework and incorporate all the metal genres, along with jazz and techo, into their sound. Really amazing and progressive.

When you said how vocals can compliment music sometime, it reminded me of how I perceive the vocals of pinback. I feel like with most other rock music, the vocals are kind of "singing" the song, whereas with pinback I feel like I'm in a soundscape with vocals being used as another instrument in the creation of the soundscape.
As for recommendations, There isn't much I could help you with.

Yea dude, Dream Theater is tame somewhat mainstream metal. The vox. and some of the progressions are pretty weak and thin but Petrucci kicks ASS on guitar! Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'll eventually get around to check out all of them (hopefully). As for my suggestions, I'll give a few readily available songs off the top of my head: Hendrix - Machine Gun (get the 12 minute version) Deep Purple - Child in Time Santana - Europa Allman Brothers - Jessica Theres a crapload more. You should be able to find these pretty easily

Dysrhythmia Philly based band...No singer, and they do a good job w/o one too. drummer is unpredictable! great stuff! http://www.dysrhythmiaband.com/d.mainpage.htm check out the song, "Four, Five, Six Minutes Late." or "Bastard" If you have a mp3 DL program, try searching for the song "Body Destroyed, Brain Intact" before you try any of them. Either way, great stuff. -J

Amorphis ( Elegy Album, or at very least ' My Kantele ' single ) , Subway to Sally ( Herzblut ) , Artrosis . All of these have a somewhat midevil flavor to them , Amorphis is a personal favorite, I have however been listening to subway to sally for many years ( not so much recently ) and they are exceptional , Artrosis is beautiful as well , female vocalist is exceptional, all of the Artrosis music I have heard was in Polish though , Amorphis did alot in English , subway to sally, is also, primerly sung in german . CMX ( a finnish band ) is another one my friends have introduced me to, they are exeptional, but all that I have heard from them, is sung in Finnish , all of these bands have a ethereal tone to them , have a looksee, if nothing else, I will of course Sugest 'My Kantele ' -Tranceharper

check out Secret Chiefs 3, their newest album Book of Horizons is a truely instrumental feast. some of the most complex and cosmically pleasing music around today IMO.
it's quite diverse, not just a rock album that's for sure, but the few metal tracks on this album are good enough to put a lot of true metal bands to shame! definately worth your listening time
