I think Fragile is a master Masterpiece. I listened to it carefully again not too long ago, and I noticed so many underlying motives and themes that prevail through both discs. The instrumentals are really what got to me, and the instrumentation is amazing... using out of tune instruments to sound like they fit perfectly, it's so obvious he spent so much time on it. Downward Spiral is also amazing, but I'm partial to Fragile. "A warm place" is my fav on that cd

It's strange. I loved Nine Inch Nails. I heard Broken first, then Pretty Hate Machine, then The Downward Spiral. This is back in middle school. I must've listened to The Downward Spiral a few times a week for about a year. Amazing songwriting and production creativity. I like DS best because each song has such a unique taste from the others, as oppose to Broken and PHM which stick to a more consistent sound from song to song. I was excited to hear The Fragile but I was really dissapointed. I'd say on The Fragile about every other track has some cool little part....as oppose to Broken and DS which are solid from start to stop. I know there's a lot of Nine Inch Nails fans who think The Fragile is Trent's best album but to me it's the weakest of the four. I think there's something going on between the age of like 12 and 17 when people are just more sensitive to music and so end up just liking whatever new stuff is released at that time more than stuff that comes before or after you're at that age.

id have to agree with Blastrid.
i have both "Downward Spiral" and "Further down the Spiral" and i still think "the Fragile" is the most amazing.
there just something about that whole album... it reaks of genious.

I used to not like it so much. Then I listened to both cd's all the way through and I appreciated it a lot more than listening to this song and that song, skipping a few, then listening to a different song. If you have it, and have the patience to listen to both cd's from start to finish it's just great.

The Fragile is absolutely one my ten favorite CDs. It takes skill to create an album that gets better with each repeated listen. After almost five years, I still listen to it often and am still finding new things to love. I also like Further Down the Spiral a lot. It's like all the best textures of the Downward Spiral mixed together. I do have a gut feeling Trent might be starting to lose his stuff though. He should just put out one more good album and hang up his fishnets.

Yes. A Warm Place is my favorite NIN track, although it's very different than most of his stuff. I like all of the main cds, but The Fragile is a masterpiece.
The Fragile had more feeling in it and less aggression- it's ra eal creative work that is considered Trent's worst for some reason. I think most people just want to hear the harsh and angry side of Trent, but the got the total opposite instead. Trent just broke away from what others expected of him and did what he felt was right- and that was the creation of a masterpiece filled with wonderful soothing energy that seemed to flow out of the inside. I don't think I can ever get sick of The Fragile. It's classic in my eyes (ears).
I think Trent was changing at this time, and since kept changing (for the better I can only speculate). This probably led to the band breaking up. Oh well, maybe it was for the best. I really hope his Tapeworm project concludes soon.

your absolutely right.
i read an interview with Maynard James Keenan once where he called the fragile a "sleeper album", or something. You have to take the time to listen and appreciate it in all its beauty and genious. It will grow on you. Like fungus.
i have such high regards for this album because it was one of the first good pieces of music that started me off on my musical evolution. The first song i ever listened to on that album was "We're in this together now" (Left side) and from there, i'd like to think i've grown a lot, musically. I appreciate so much more now then i used to when i first started really listening to music.
why am i rambling so?

Anyone heard the And all That Could Have Been bonus CD Still? That has some sweet songs.... best being Leaving Hope. I used to love NIN, now I realize there are better bands, but they still are sweet at times.

This probably led to the band breaking up.
Where did you read that they had broken up? I read not long ago him talking about the new album he was working on. About how it was supposed to more aggressive than the fragile, as he stated "12 fast punches to the face" rather than another drawn out epic (the fragile). *edit* As quotes from Alternative Press... 00:01 NINE INCH NALS TITLE: bleedthrough (NOTHING) EXPECT IT: "Soon." "The record explores loss and possible discovery of self," says Trent Reznor about the follow-up to 1999's The Fragile, "along with alternate layers of reality and perception set inside a nightmare you can't seem to wake up from; with lots of feedback." Reznor has enlisted Atticus Ross, Jerome Dillon, Leo Herrera, mix engineer Rich Costey and Rick Rubin to help mold bleedthrough, which will feature new songs such as "The Line Begins To Blur," "Everyday Is Exactly The Same" and "My Dead Friend." This time out, Reznor is introducing high-tech to low-life. "Computers, among other things, are ruining music these days," he says. "I hate the Pro Tooled sound of perfection and everything being 'fixed.' This record is most definitely 'un-fixed.'" And when it comes to touring behind the release, T. Rez is planning on reinventing the will. "It won't be the last tour over again. That person isn't here anymore." *end edit*

i was a junior in high school when DS came out.... jesus christ that was a great album in the day, but like PHM, DS is dated to the era in which it came out. you can hear the 80's in PHM. you can hear the mid 90's in DS, but i cant hear y2k in the fragile. i think it will be remembered as his most timeless piece of music to date. i didnt really appreciate the fragle when it first came out, but i was looking for another DS. once i opened my ears to it, i was totally blown away. i had the same problem with bjork and radiohead. with bjork, after Post came out, i was totally blown away. so muchg so that when homogenic came out, i was expecting another Post... which it definitely wasnt. it took me a year before i realized how good homogenic actually was. same way with kid a and ok computer in reguards to radiohead. the more i listen to actual great bands the more i realize that the reason i concider them great is because that, usually, each album isnt a repeat of previous work, but an evolution to something new.

NIN rules..

TDS is still my favorite. The Fragile is excellent, but it lacks the immediacy and intensity of emotion that the previous albums had, IMO. The lyrics seemed more generic, less evocative. It was good, but I hope he moves past that style to something new; I'm sure he will. This five-year break between albums is trying my patience. The least he could have done is finished the DOOM soundtrack in the mean time.

that seems like a substantial amount of time for growth.
its probably best that way, IMO. Most bands spit out albums too fast, and their music ends up lacking in quality. Or they just put out the same ol' shit.

reason for the drums soundforge for the voice sample isolation from VHS I also chopped the whole original song into loops and sped it up from 140bpm to 160 bpm the arrangement was done in sonar
right now I'm learning how to use logic and ableton live. When i get my midiman oxygen keyboard I will be using these programs to produce some wicked jungle

yeah, ease is exactly what I'm looking for.
thats why I quit producing music over a year ago- it was just too painstaking with the mickey mouse equipment i had. Those tracks I posted took like a week apiece, and they're not even all that intricate.
what I hate is having to work on the same idea for a week+, then getting bored with it, and forgetting several accompany parts, and coming up with ideas for new songs while you are still trying to hammer out something else.
I just want to get the ease of production down to the point where I can get ideas down as quick as I can think of them. Otherwise I get bored and frustrated.
