Are forums a vestigial part of communities? * 2
    #28546418 -

Long time participant in the medical marijuana industry... when I first started all there was were forums for the most cutting edge of what folks were up to, the leading edge of it all with all the big names to be found. The newest creations offered in the private community, with individual members going out into the world as spearheads in their own locales.

As time went on, and as all knowledge goes on, the next generations to carry the torch moved to newer avenues of expression and interaction like Facebook and Instagram. Exposure is the surest way to reach the most eyes, whether for profit or knowledge. Even now I can look back at the forums I came from and see the information as well as the participants are still 3-4 years behind in the most up to date knowledge that's readily available on Instagram to your average person on growing top shelf Marijuana. That's not that information isn't available and verifiable, but those that know, on average, aren't active in avenues like forums in the classical sense any longer...

Is this just a high thought? I'm new to the practice of mycology... I understand the warnings of reddit or Instagram for information but I've been a witness to the disparity in other industries.

Does any of this make sense to anybody?

I'm trying to crawl as much of this site as I can and I see highly regarded legends like Roger Rabbit using snake venom and serious enthusiasts like Muad making advancements in the actual science of it all that dwarves this old school forum paradigm. The rest of the folks who seem to be on the cutting edge are now mainly on Instagram,  just like it was for marijuana.

The basics will always be the foundation, that's why I'm here now, but...

Are forums, in their traditional sense, a vestigial of communities now and into the future?

My interpretation of this is where the experts frequent will be the best source.

Certain forums like Shroomery and to an extent Future4200 are where new and novel techniques originate and become refined.

Typically with social media outlets engagement and profitability take priority over good tek. It isn't the case for every hobby, but it certainly seems that way when talking about mycology.

Also the semantics are a bit blurry here. I consider any internet forum to qualify as a community. So it cannot be vestigial to itself, but I could be wrong about that.

Yes. Obviously.

They do sometimes offer more in-depth knowledge than other places, and since the content is less volatile than on other social media, they do have a place. But this changes nothing about the fact that they're mostly a relic from the past. Of course, in-depth knowledge is a bit of a relic of the past, so it's only appropriate.

Point me to someone on Instagram or Facebook that isn't just trying to sell unstable spore varieties.

Actually, there is a lot of disinformation in Facebook and Instagram. Just to give two examples, Uncle Ben's tek and shooting spores to grain are widely promoted for growing mushrooms. In order to sift through the garbage found on social media platforms, one has to have good knowledge of the field. And this knowledge can't be reliably obtained in those social media  platforms.

This is also the case for instagram and facebook. Plenty of outdated an debunked information continues to be disseminated in those platforms.

The conservativeness actually provides comfort because most folks absolutely won't advocate anything unproven, while you get more experimentation elsewhere

Great examples because they are some of the most terrible ideas propagated on logical merit alone 🀣 but maybe social media is where you find the extremes of the best and worst and the forums is the backbone where the good shit spawns from

Forums are timeless, I don't care what anyone says. Yes, technology has made a lot of these things feel "obsolete" by comparison to social media, etc., but it really is a completely different strain (no pun intended) of information exchange and consumption IMHO.

Some of the best friendships of my entire life, were made through web forums for certain games, hobbies, and bands.

The Shroomery represents something that's truly timeless, despite the internet soaring right along.

I had great luck with Uncle Ben's. I tried it just for fun (after years of growing via numerous methods). It's cheap and way easier to setup than BRF. Just as successful. Probably way cheaper if you consider your time as an investment. That is an unpopular opinion around here, and I do shoeboxes via agar plates when I really want to grow, but getting people into growing via Uncle Ben's is pretty straightforward even if it is not the most efficient way to grow.

Anyways, I agree that forums are far better than social media. FB, Reddit, etc., rely on never ending content turn over. Not great for learning anything in a reliable manner. Stewardship of content and knowledge is important and forums like this one accel in that.

I don't know enough to say. Marijuana yes, what they talk about now, was available 3-4 years ago.

Maybe. This also has a drawback, in that on some forums, certain untruths keep being propagated by an old guard who are incapable or unwilling to learn, even if they're demonstrably wrong.

In the beginning years of MXE people were religiously using is sublingually "because everyone does it". One day i challenged that by swallowing it, and it was just as active just as fast. So i went to bluelight and spread the message. Guess what? People kept doing it sublingually, they didnt peer review it, it was just swept under the rug.

Orthodoxy in research is something terrible.

Horses for courses.  Some people don't want to be all in the lime light with 10mil view and likes of insta influences.  More than likely find a lot of them will have accounts here and do insta for fame and glory.  As for Facebook, when your grandparents have a account there it's not my scene.  Had a account back in 05 -07 then it just turned to a shitshow.

Setting aside information exchange for a moment, I beleive all urges to communicate with others via the web are a symptom of social deficiency.  Every message board, forum, social media - all of it.  I find it strange to say one is much different than any other.  It's all electronic messaging.  Rooted in the desire to commune with others.  Arguing is a form of communion.  That's why so many enjoy it.
