Disturbing State Of One Peyote Catcus
    #2823962 - 06/24/04 12:04 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

First off, you guys are not going to like this picture. :frown:

Back awhile ago I got this brown scar-type stuff on my catcus. It had just arrived from being shipped from Norway, and when it got here, it looked fine. A couple of days later, when I went to take it back out of the box to plant it, it had this brown gash looking thing in it, like this:

Anyways, it had grown bigger in size since that picture was taken, and I was adviced to take and scrape all of the brown shit off with a knife, and then let it callus over. It hasn?t done much of anything, just got a little discolored where it was scraped off.. but then recently, as you can see in the picture, that brown shit started back up again on the skin around where it was scraped.

I admit I?m not too informed, so perhaps I fucked something up majorly.. but I?m wondering if there is anything I can still do? The catcus still appears to be alive and everything... should I scrape the new shit off and let it sit again? Is there anything I should be putting over where the shit was scraped off to help it callus?

I heard something about possibly burning the whole area, that it might help.. I have no clue what to do... has anyone faced something like this before?

Or should I give up hope, cut that whole section off, and eat the rest? I still have the beautiful specimen that is seen in my avatar, so its not like I?m totally lost... but it holds a lot of sentimental value for me... it was suspossed to flower this year. :frown:

Any help is much appreciated!

Peace. :mushroom2:

It's getting deep it seems. You run a good chance of losing the specimen i think.

You could try burning it, but you'd want to burn into the flesh a little and that would probably accomplish the same as just digging into the area with a knife and getting into good healthy flesh and letting that callous. Then hope it starts to pup.

If that doesn't help and it gets even worse then you'll want just chop off the top of the button removing any dead, diseased, necrotic, or infected tissue that maybe left. This is what i mean when you stand a chance of losing the specimen, if you don't catch the spread of the problem in time to rectify it by chopping the button in half and letting that callous.

Oh man that is a sorry state of affairs. Well I would recomend cutting not burning. My Peruvian Torch looked very much the same. I cut the area off and added some perlite to the soal to help prevent rot. Hope it all works out for you

You could treat it with something anti-bacterial... alcohol, peroxide.. To help it heal, Folar Feeding is probably good. The calcium is supposed to help with callousing, but I bet it's anti-bacterial too.

It really doesnt look good. The rot made it's way to the meristem...

it was just a parasite, leave it dry for it to recover without giving room for fungi/infection and he'll at worst keep pupping and growing...
i also have one with a big 'bite' on its side...

That is minor. If it gets soft cut the soft spot out and it will be fine. Oh yeah...only water it when the soil is totally dry and expose it to heat and lots of sunlight. Do not water when the temp is below 70 degrees F

I'm sorry, I know very little about cacti, but I would love to help. I know how you feel!!

Is it a fungus? Does anyone know what sulfur would do?

Maybe you have something in your air that keeps infecting it. mold spores maybe . try what they said about getting rid of it (the browning hole part) and see if you can find it a little terrarium to help keep out forgien infections. oh and less water

i'm new to peyote cultivation but don't peyote buttons prefer the shade? isn't "lots of sunlight" actually harmful. like i said, i'm new, so i want to know what information is correct out there.

Peyote is a desert cactus. While seedlings need shade, mature plants need lots of sunlight like any desert cactus.

not completely true, peyote grows under bushes, "he" doesn't like full sun, it will burn without some kind of light filtering.

Funny, I have harvested it in the wild before (I know it is endangered, but I am more enlightened now) and found much of it growing in clumps fully exposed to sun.

home grown specimens aren't often grown right out in full sun, so once they're exposed they get burnt a bit, but then in time recover and do just fine.

All right, thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate it. Later tonight I will try to cut that area off and try to get the healthy tissue to callus. I'll make sure to water it less as well. It isn't in optium conditions, but it still gets plenty of sunlight and a decent temperature. As soon as I can, I will get a terrarium or something where I can regulate temperatures, and some better soil...

Wish luck!

Older ones take the sun better. I have also found peyote in the wild. MANY.

99% of them were under the spikey bushes, where they got sun all day - but it was broken-up sun.

The ones in the open are usually more hardy and older.

Your trouble sounds like thrips. Spray with pyrethrenes(only on peyote, NOT San Pedro or the torch).
