The ones I liked (and have listened to extensively) are; Zappa in New York, Joe's Garage Act I, and the Shut Up and Play Your Guitar series. He's remembered for his unusual songs, but that man could play the gee-tar like nobody's business!

Be quick and check out HOT RATS. A musical album (words in only one song, circa 1972?), and features "Peaches en Regalia," one of his best songs. If you get a chance to check out that song, you'll get a feel of what the rest of the album is like. Very psychedelic, grand, and professional. One of his earliest attempts at arranging, and a very well-acheived effort at that. Nothing but good words for it. If you are looking to discover his roots first, check out FREAK OUT, his first with the Mothers of Invention. It is "out there," being, perhaps, the worlds first true concept album, and half of the songs really aren't even songs, just spoken, hummed or screamed, but a twisted maasterpiece from a twisted genius. It's sound may be a bit dated now, but it's message of taking a "straight" world and "freaking" them out still rings comically clear. Not a album that you can continually listen to (because you yourself may freak out upon doing so), but great none the less.
Hope you find something cool! Let us know!
Peace.

^^Plus Hot Rats has "Willie the pimp" on it.. Freak Out is great, the "it can't happen here/Monster Magnet" are YEARS ahead of their time. Waka Jawaka if you want some groovin' jazz. (check out the tune "one shot deal" with any kinda buzz) If you want live, get "Frank Zappa plays Frank Zappa". Amazing album!

I have three zappa albums so far, Freakout!, We're Only In It For The Money, and Over-Nite Sensation; his three most highly acclained albums. They're pretty good and I want Hot Rats next.

Apostrophe and Overnight sensation are great... even better if you can find the CD release which has both albums on one disc. The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka have a very jazz/rock feel to them... i love to listen to them when I'm driving. My personal fav is The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life... a collection of life tracks from his tour in 1988. Great originals and a few crazy covers.

Sweet, you guys rock. I'll see what I can get my hands on!
Whenever I play moe. or Umphrey's McGee around people who don't know what they're listening to they always seem to ask, "Is that Frank Zappa? Well it sounds like Frank Zappa." And considering this is some of my favorite music, it seems I need some Zappa. So thanks again.
