Writing on Frank Zappa's artistic output, Ben Watson, in FRANK ZAPPA: THE NEGATIVE DIALECTICS OF POODLE PLAY (1993), says:

"Despite his professional involvement in music and the music business, with all its temptations to special status and art-ideology flatulence, Zappa always directs his attention to the mind of the average person. That it is frequently the *unconscious* aspect of that person's mind makes his art uniquely democratic, a FINNEGANS WAKE in records. In Zappa, truth - blunt, banal, everyday - is *always* stranger than fiction." - p.xxxi

"To build a surrealist documentary of modern life, one that challenges FINNEGANS WAKE for scale, complexity and breadth of reference, and explicitly site it in the marketplace is cultural outrage of the highest order. It is a blow to hierarchies of value that moralism, no matter how well intentioned, can never achieve, because moralism relies on a notion of the few who are saved percolating truth to the damned below." - p.215

"The garish vulgarity of OVERNITE SENSATION [an album released by Zappa in 1973 - Bob] means that it has not gained the careful psychoanalysis granted, say, FINNEGANS WAKE, but beneath the superficial gloss Zappa is performing all kinds of operations - shifting letters, secret puns, strange combinations - characteristic of the unconscious." - p.220

"You cannot approach Zappa as you would Andre Gide or Sting, absorbing their art and imagining some rounded human personality. You must deal with it as you would FINNEGANS WAKE, actively tracing images and connections as they emerge on the material surface. This is modern art you cannot approach in the old way." - p.229

I guess it's not so strange that "Zappa" and "Joyce" contributed to "McLuhan's" communications via Glow.
