Fair enough

Yet I still think it should be kept in mind that maybe ultra sanitized somewhat social distancing was just a better cleaner way of life for everyone limiting all sorts of infections and keeping things safer.

Its too bad some diseases could be wiped off the face of the planet but others cannot.

I mean there's a dynamic process of feedback between viruses and their hosts. When some new virus that's especially virulent and no doctor knows how to treat comes out comes out caution is wise. Lots more people would have died without the vaccine.  but generally speaking acquiring immunity in a way that doesn't bypass any of the usual mechanisms is also wise, in a long term sense

I would say hospital capacity has been the primary concern. Case rates were a proxy because hospitalizations lag cases by weeks. When cases go up hospitalizations will go up in two weeks. The question is how many cases would start to strain the system.

The first wave on a graph looks small. There wasn’t much testing available so the number of cases are severely under counted. It was also ended quickly due to the stay at home orders.

Looks like the silent wave in the US is petering out. Short of another new variant that has been evolving outside the human population, covid is done. These gradually mutating variants are just not enough to overcome this level of acquired immunity.

Doesn't feel like its done over here. Two cases like one degree of separation of me just popped up, feels close. I'm extra paranoid because i'm working a show right now. Most folks, you get it, you miss a week of work, bummer. In my industry one case can fuck up the whole production, fucks everybody's week.

Once they allow kids 5 and under to get vaccinated, all these protocols need to go (unless we get a wildly mutated variant.) The only people left unprotected are the ones who have chosen to be, and there aren’t enough of them to fuck shit up if they all got sick at once.

I had one of those 10-year "flus" early in 2020 that, in retrospect, was surely covid. Ended up going to urgent care for antibiotics when I felt it round the corner into pneumonia. Nobody expressed much interest in testing me for flu or covid. Just "yeah, you got pneumonia, the treatment's the same either way." But I remember, at the height of feverish misery, thinking out of the blue how my sense of taste was all fucked up.

Once I was fully vaccinated, I began traveling again. Kind of a necessity for me, really. And yeah, I think I've caught various waves of it myself, too. Definitely feels very different from minor colds and whatnot.

NYC is very confusing now. Seems like everyone is just doing whatever they feel comfortable with, I guess. Adams certainly doesn't seem to think of lockdowns as desirable, that's for sure.

Remember, early on, we had jack shit in terms of treatment and prevention options. Then they managed to develop vaccines, started to open up a bit, and went with "OK, if you're vaccinated, then you don't need to wear a mask." THEN they realized that people would just lie. And that, rather than queue up to get a vaccine ASAP, a bunch of people were going to just avoid them for as long as possible. Then they tried vaccine passports, etc., and then it just blew up into a stupid political issue, with strong connections to identity politics. Because a lot of people are just self-obsessed morons. Now everyone is just trying to decide what to do locally, and the pressure to get back to late-stage capitalism as usual is just too great.

From what I've heard, the vaccines actually still work pretty well, despite the mutations. It may just be an indefinite "get the booster every 6 months" type of deal. Herd immunity technically applies to group immunity by any means- I think ideally it would be a combination of vaccines plus exposure-based immunity. Like, if everyone was vaccinated, then these mutations would run through the vaccinated population and eventually peter out. Unfortunately, with so many areas still repping no mask and no vaccine so hard, that's probably not gonna happen. I think we're just stuck with another endemic disease.

So, yeah, I'm fucking done. I'll mask up if there's a sign explicitly telling me to. And take my boosters, and start taking flu shots too, and stay home if I'm sick. There just doesn't seem to be much of a point in going any further than that, at least not in a time and place where so many people are still stuck in the goddamn middle ages. If I go above and beyond trying to be responsible, there will just be a dozen people somewhere else talking about 'Murica and their freedoms, and some politician trying to re-open everything as fast as possible to pander to business interests.

I heard that several varieties of flu actually went extinct during lockdown.

I heard and read some stuff recently about smallpox and other vaccines. I guess vaccine resistance is nothing new, but back in the olden days they just didn't play. If smallpox were around today, we'd probably never get rid of it, and Joe Rogan would be running his mouth about how drinking raw milk cures it or some shit.

CA is on the rise. Humboldt is having as high or higher case rates as during some of our Delta waves. Hospitalization is a daily occurrence and we only have 20 or 30 beds open at any given time all across the county. Again, CA as a whole is on the rise.


Oh yeah, I keep forgetting, "Covid's over!"

On a good day, pre covid, the entire county has 20-30 hospital beds, including ER.

With covid, even just recently with friends who have gone to the hospital(s), IF they can get you in, it's an 8+ hour wait at times. You have to drive South out of thre county or to Redding if you're in the NE part of the county.
