The problem: The point of the wash is to clean out the crap but leave in the DMT, you need pH 11 to keep the DMT in the non-polar solvent, but you can't use NaOH because it will end up in the final product. So using distilled water works until the pH drops below 11 - and if it's not neutral the solvent needs more washing(loss of DMT) so it's kind of a catch 22 at this point.. I'll think of something if nobody else does (help) but for now I think I'll stop washing when the pH drops below 11, then recrystalization as usual might just do it..

The Solution: Use Sodium Carbonate, as opposed to Sodium Bicarbonate. Also use small amounts of liquids. Sorry I don't have enough time to go into detail. check this link
