New Zealand has had a very successful zero covid strategy. Probably the only other country besides China that has managed to avoid any significant outbreaks. Like China, very little to no naturally acquired immunity. Unlike China, New Zealand has vaccinated 95% of eligible people and nearly 100% of their elderly. When omicron hit they decided to let it rip. The omicron wave is peaking and almost nobody in the country is dying. It’s really quite an amazing feat they’ve accomplished.

What’s insane about China is they must have understood the only way a zero covid strategy would succeed is if they vaccinated close the the entire population. There’s no natural immunity, so anyone not vaccinated is vulnerable to the most severe covid outcomes. China has 300+ million people who have completely covid naive immune systems. If omicron gets out of control in mainland China, it’s going to be a fucking bloodbath. They seem to be having success knocking down outbreaks, but Jesus Christ how long can they keep doing this. China needs to act like China for once and force the vaccine on every person in the country. I have no idea why they’ve let themselves end up this vulnerable. The only difference between China and New Zealand is the vaccination rate. It’s not that hard a lesson to learn.

Doubt the vaccines are preventing much infection but they probably keep people out of the hospital. If not, China is even more fucked.

I wore a red western bandana for the first few months of the pandemic.

I'd agree with that more or less. I'm still seeing people wearing cloth masks and some surgical. a few people with KN95s and almost nobody with N95s. I think I'm going to start wearing a half face respirator just to fuck with people.

I have usually worn a cloth mask but it has a filter inserted inside of it to add extra protection.  Always wear that shit tight on my face.  Well, I haven't been wearing a mask for the past week now, however, because I think things are going well here in my area.  And I have my vaccinations and booster taken care of and I'll get the fourth shot once I'm allowed to.
